After putting in a bell crank kit, I’ve still got about 10 degrees of play either direction in my steering on the 1967 CJ5. I can live with it, but it would be nice to tighten it up.
Kaiser Willys has a Ross Sector Shaft Repair Kit for 1941-1966 CJ5 for $85. This one is for a 7/8in shaft. Then they have a Sector Shaft Repair Kit for 1966-1971 CJ5 for $225. This one is for a 15/16in shaft. Big price difference. Since this jeep is not all original, I’m kind of hoping that at some point in its life a steering box was installed with the 7/8in shaft so I can use the cheaper repair kit. I put a caliper on the shaft where it comes out of the box and it measured .911 in. So, it measures right between 7/8 and 15/16. There are some numbers on the steering box, both stamped in and cast. I assume that the stamped number is a part number or serial number. The people at Kaiser Willys said they don’t have any way to reference the number. They said to disassemble the steering box and measure the shaft. But I’d rather not go to the effort to take it out and apart because if it is the 15/16in shaft I would rather just live with the play than pay the $225 right now. The stamped number is “TL13233ZC”. The number that is cast into the case is “66”. Can anyone tell me if you can tell by these numbers if this steering box would take the $85 7/8in repair kit or the $225 15/16in repair kit? Here are some pictures of the numbers.

    Thanks

Not to say it hasn't been changed but the 4 cylinder ROSS box is smaller than the one for the 225V6.

V6 uses the 15/16 repair kit. At the time I rebuilt mine KieserWillys didn't have them yet. Tried to find the sector shaft else where. Located some NOS for $400.00+. Needless to say I didn't buy it. After opening up the gear box the shaft and pivots weren't that worn. So I replaced what I could and put it back together. I also have about the same amount of play you mentioned, but it actually drives really good. It tracks straight when driving. I am happy with it. There is a product called "tight steer" for right under $100.00 that claims to improve steering. Mixed reviews on it.

Yes, it is a V6. Thanks for your responses. I suspect that it is the 15/16in shaft, so I will just live with the slop for awhile. Like RJ, mine drives well and tracks straight. Just have to anticipate the curves on the highway and take out the play before you start the turn. My wife won't drive it though. Maybe that's a good thing?

    Repair if desired.
Go to the search function either here or on the 3B Bulletin Board.
Search the terms "Ross tapered swage".
