Hey there everyone, finally gettn around to sm 420/dana 20 swap....So jeep is v6 with small 1210 york ends on stock FRONT drive shaft and new dana 20 has 1310 as well the new Commando dana 30 (thanks Dennis) is a 1310.
So question is how much $$$ should it cost to fab up a new LONGER shaft with 2x 1310 yokes ends? As well if anyone has done this swap does the O.D of new front drive shaft have to remain the same thinness as stock v6 to clear side of sm420??? This tranny is a monsters....overkill!!!??

    Thanks everyone
SO funny my v6 BH bolts up perfectly to 420.... t-90 clutch disc slides on 420 input splines, p-bearing looks the same od ... though does the throw out bearing not ride on the input shaft collar? The front collar of 420 does not seem very long for bearing to slide back and forth on????
    Thanks J

Double check your pilot bushing is the right size. You can measure the tip of both input shafts to make sure. Swap to the bigger joints. The smaller ones had no purpose and are more expensive to swap.

I swapped in an SM420/Dana18 TC, so I'm not sure about the differences in clearance, but I kept the original small yokes because driveshaft yoke clearance with the 420 is TIGHT. I just bought some PTO tubing the same size as the original drive shaft and had a driveshaft place fab it up. Pilot bushing should be the same IIRC. The TO bearing does ride on the input shaft bearing retainer, it looks like there isn't much throw but I actually had to shorten my collar because it was hitting the friction disc center.

Like ucd, I had very little clearance between the sm420 and the front driveshaft yoke. I kept the small yoke. Works very well.

Great thanks for info! Can the 1210 Dana yoke on my old d18 be installed on a Dana 20 case that already has a 1310 yoke, are splines same, thickness of front input shaft same ? More importantly what freaky socket is used to get the 1/14 or 1 1/8 nut of the smallish 1210 york off d18? All my sockets the O.D to thick to fit in within ears of yoke and go over nut!!?
    Thanks j

I just pulled a 1210 yoke off my Dana 20 the other day. I had to pick up a 1/2" drive 1-1/8" chrome deep socket to fit. My impact socket wouldn't fit. I bought a cheap auto parts store socket so I wouldn't be upset if I broke it with the impact.
