Fabricating Dauntless Motor Mounts

I am in the process of building a stacked frame for a CJ6. I have a 225 Dauntless that came off of a 1967 CJ5. I have the original frame but the motor mounts are specifically designed to position the engine level while resting on the upward "curved" portion of the frame rails. The frame I'm building has no such "curve" and I need motor mounts that will position the engine correctly on level frame rails. I have an idea of fabricating such motor mounts out of 2 x 4 steel tube, but wanted to know if any of you have done this before?

 

i made my mounts out of 2x2 square tube welded to the frame on a 1/4 plate. you can buy these things ready made from Novak. so far mine are good and are probably overbuilt. I started with a poor cj3a frame though.

compound angles to make it right. no idea what they are, just make it work, get it as gap free in the fit up as possible, tack it, check it and finish weld. the mounts will not be the same. IIRC its offset to the passenger side an inch and a half of so, but you're making it, so whatever works is right.

 

oh yeah, you have to weld in a pipe inside the square tube for the motor mount bolt to stop it from collapsing.

 

Awesome looking CJ2! Thanks for the pics. So it looks like you have the 2x2 coming straight off the frame (though welded to a plate as posted in your previous post). Is there any angle to the 2x2 from the frame, or are they parallel to the frame rails? also, do you need any gussets on the frame to support the 2x2. I guess I'm just worried about the weight of the engine--but I tend to overbuild things.

 

compound angle of some degree. I donno actually. My 2a was never supposed to have a buick in it. Trial and error until it was right. I never even saw a v6 in a 2a or a cj5. only 304s and 134s in later cj5s and 2a's. I had no plans, no blueprints, nothing. some people would say its bubbafied and others might like it. who cares? Fact is i got some free half rotted out frames that the previous owners welded on and made it work. results may vary.
