Hi All- Been searching google pix for a while and can't find a good close up of how the shift rods attach to the transfer case. On my 57, the rods go through the floor and are not attached to the rods that go in and out of the case. I can stick them in the grooves to shift if necessary, but they flop out- nothing is there to hold them in. Nothing is really attached to the shift rods at the end- it's just the end that is flattened out and that fits nicely into the grooves. What am I missing beside a bunch of safety wire? :)

Actually nothing holds the shifter ends into the shift rails- the fit between the shifters, the xfer case front casting & the pivot pin that passes through both should be tight enough to keep everything in the right place. There are a couple of leaf springs that fit over the pin & into indents on the shifter canes but they're there as rattle eliminators rather than to keep the shifter & rails engaged.

Sounds like the pin is worn out from lack of grease, maybe the holes in the levers are sloppy too. The little springs do take up some slack but not much. As mentioned they are mainly for anti-rattle.

I guess that makes sense and why I couldn't see anything in any of the pictures I found! I think I have issues around that pivot pin area. Thanks again for the help.
