This isn't really tech, but thought I'd pass it on just in case someone finds it useful. While doing my wiring, I thought it would be a good idea to have a fire extinguisher handy. I probably should have had one a long time ago anyway. Now that I'm done with the wiring (for now--still need to make a new dash, which will require moving gauges, etc.), I mounted it in the Jeep. I didn't trust hanging it from the plastic bracket that came with it, I wanted the bottom of the fire extinguisher to sit on a flat surface, supporting its own weight, with the bracket just holding it in place. But I didn't want it rattling either. So I went to Home Depot and found a thick, foam toilet tank-to-toilet-bowl gasket. It fit perfect!

It's solidly mounted and no rattles...

Looks good, what's the fire exstiguisher rated for?

The PO put a metal mount next to the drivers seat on wheel well, and the exstiguisher is MIA :(

Good one Focker! Love the Avatar!

Piff, it's for gasoline and other fluid fires and electrical fires if that's what you mean by its rating.

I have mine in the same area behind the drivers seat attached to the roll bar. I've had to use it twice (on other vehicles).

One thing that I've thought about is the gas tank filler is on that side. If there were a spark to ignite the fumes from the gas tank the fire would be in the way of getting to the extinguisher. I haven't done it yet but I'm considering moving it over to the pass side.

If my gas tank fumes ignited, one way or the other I don't think I'd be anywhere close enough to use a portable extinguisher... and I'm a firefighter.

Those little extinguishers are not enough to counter an exploding gas tank.
I carry one in every vehicle, and they can stop a small incipient fire, but I've also seen three of them used on an engine fire with no effect.

AKCJ, I wouldn't move it but would suggest adding a second one. Having one quickly accessible to the driver can be important.

I had a 3 lb halon between the fuel filler neck and body. Had to use it on an electrical fire. Kinda stinks I didn't have something more disposable like those.
With a hard top the wheel wells are not very accessible just keep that in mind, If you plan to use a top.

Yeah, that's something I have thought about. Where it is now is perfect with the sun bonnet on, but would probably be awkward to reach around and grab in pinch (to quote Focker) with the hardtop on. I think Nick has a good idea about installing 2 of them.

Don't forget to take em out and shake up upside down every so often(the dry chem ones) the powder settles and renders them less effective.

I made some I was pretty happy with using metal wall mounts, a couple exhaust clamps and some strap steel:

I mounted one between my legs in front of the seat and one next to the back seat.
