    Hey all,

I am in the process of rebuilding my transfer case (d18) and after I had it dip cleaned, I noticed that one of the caps on the front of the case can be removed. It is where the shifter rod would go when you are shifting either 2/4 or hi/lo (I am not sure which one).

Does anyone know how those shoudl be secured? Weld? Gasket sealant?

    Any thoughts would be great.

    Thanks!

Both should be able to be removed and are a slight interference (press) fit. Should require a long punch to remove. If not then the loose one needs slightly distorted to stay in place or find a replacement. R&P and plenty others should have used ones around. I always remove them and put a thin coat of RTV around the outside of the cap where it presses in to hold them in place and keep them from leaking.
Just for information purposes, those sheet metal caps are the same for Dana 18, Dana 20, and Dana 300 transfer cases.

    Interesting. Thanks for the response.

I also emailed Herm and he said to silicone them. It certainly isn't sloppy and presses in hard. I think I will use the one that I have for now and watch it. If it leaks, then I can replace it as it seems to be on the easy side to do.

    Thanks
