Is there any way to tell from the VIN if you have a Renegade?

I have a 1973 CJ-5 w/ the V8 and 3 speed manual. I also have the padded dash and the paint is... well, it's obviously been repainted a LOT.

So I'm just wondering if there's a chance that I have a Renegade. I bought the vehicle from someone who got it in a lien sale, so the prior history is pretty much unknown.

    Thanks!

Does it have a tailgate? '73 Renegades all had solid back panels.

Ooh - ooh .... you can tell from the paint code on the VIN plate.

If all Renegades came without tailgates, are all tailgate-less CJ's Renegades?

I'd like to know because my '74 has no tailgate.

Don't think so. Just Renegades had no tailgate but CJ-5s could come with or without as I recall.

No. Solid back panel is neccessary but not sufficient.

The solid back panel was part of the Renegade package as well as being on the option list. Unlike today, Jeeps then had a long option list from which the buyer could mix and match. My brand-new '73 had all the options a Renegade came with except for the wheels, paint color and stripes.

No, not from the VIN. The paint code on the VIN plate should be a good indicator though - 508, 509 or 510 I think. There's also a trim code which might help. I don't know how to read the trim code though. Explanation of the VIN plate codes is in the first few pages of your TSM.

    autocolorlibrary.com has the paint codes. There's a '72 TSM online at c104.net - it's a very slow link though. You can buy a TSM from Turner's http://www.thejeep.net/catalog/prod...84&PHPSESSID=cfa87940a4506b16634aea342f57a3ce or books4cars.com

In '77 the paint code is in the middle of the VIN plate, but in '72 there's a separate paint and trim plate over by the battery. A '73 factory manual (TSM, FSM) would say where the paint code is for sure.

In '77 the plate looks like this:

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    ...................JEEP CORPORATION
    ...................TOLEDO, OHIO USA
    <Sales Order #>.................<Special Sales Request #>
    <Factory Use Only>.......<Paint>............<Trim>
    <VIN>.....................................<Model #>
    --------------------------------------------------------

My paint code is 528 (Mellow Yellow?) and my trim code is 422.

If anyone has any info on what these mean, I would appreciate enlightenment.

The TSM decodes paint not trim, for that you would need a Jeep parts catalog.

I can tell you that the 528 Mellow Yellow was a 74 color not a 73, so they must of painted your Jeep late in the year using the following year color. The inside trim paint only came in three colors in 73, black, green and buff.

Edit:They did make a Daisy Yellow in 73.
