I've seen these, but have no idea where it would mount. Also, any thoughts on this item?

    That's a side-spare mount.

You can see the holes on SSDutch where the original went:

Not a good choice for oversized tires or a Jeep that actually sees offroad time.

If you put one on the tailgate make sure to do some reinforcing.

I used one on the front of the Bantam:

No biggie Mike. I thought I was halucinating...

I would be using an original rim with a tire the height of mine, but not the same size. I need to make it work with the jerry can I have on the tailgate as well. I would reinforce the tailgate. Would this work?

I just don't want to spend big $ on a carrier when I dont use the tailgate anyway...

LMAO...I scrolled up, then down, then --ahh IC. R)

I wouldn't mount to the tailgate if I was me (IIWM ;) ). Could damage it with a heavy tire and wheel. Will also make alot of racket.

My carrier broke last year at Tellico from stressing the steel. The PO built it for a stock tire and rim. The Swamper was waaaaaay too much for it

What's a better solution. I would like to carry a spare. I can leave it in the bed for now, but with the rear seat in, that option won't work. I like oldbill's tire carrier design, but not sure that I want to go through that much fabrication. And I definately don't want it mounted on the side...

Mount it to the rollbar down tube, standing on the wheelhouse, right behind the driver.

I think there's some pretty good ideas on Dr. Vern's page and also the CJ3B page for putting it on the tailgate.

I don't think there's enough room there, leaving clearance for the soft top bows and not intruding into the passenger space.

Dennis has one of them thar "shorty Jeeps"... :D

IMHO bite the bullet and get or make a nice rear bumper and swingout. All roads eventually lead to this setup anyway...;)

I was thinking about doing a Pre-Runner style on the Commando. That is after a roll cage gets put in after a while. I am already loosing enough departure angle, figured that might help a bit.

I was actully leaning toward using an M-38 mount on my tailgate, and then using a 'stock' tire and rim like Dennis mentioned. I'm using a repop tailgate, that has the reinforcing inside it just like the M-38 had. Once the tailgate is bolted shut, I figgered it would be plenty strong but now I'm not so sure. I was also planning on installing a GI-type can holder on the back, also like the M-38.

    Something like this: http://www.sr4x4s.homelinux.com/Pete's Willys Pictures/1951 M-38 Pics/slides/m38 resto 3.html

FWIW- I found some stainless steel carriage bolts that fit the bolt holes in the side of the body where the stock mount goes. I was planning to just put them in and bolt them down from behind, with a dab of silicon sealer to keep water out.

This is what I found from the cj3b site. Looks like a good solution.

    http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/TailgateSpare.html

I dont know if the swing away mount is what I want. I like the jerry can on the rear and most of the swing-aways would not accomodate that set-up.

You could always do a mount similar to my cooler mount:

Or use ConFerrs adapater and blitz can clamp:

Otherwise if you're building it there's alot of ways to fit a Jerry Can mount.
