hey everyone, im new to the board and im dont currently have a jeep but i have found one that id like to buy, but i need more info on it.

It doesn't have a vin tag and I cannot find any numbers stamped into the frame. it a a inline 4 cly with a t-90 transmission (casting number reads "T-90 148"), a dana 18 t-case. I beleave the rear axle is a danna 44 with 2 peice axle shafts (it has the small round caps on the ends) I have no idea what the front axle is, though from reading on the sight i think it is either a dana 25 or 27. there is a PTO off the back of the transfercase going to a gear box bolted to the rear bumper. there is a tag on the rear axle housing that reads "rebuilt by atlanta ord div. DATE 6-60. JOB # 74-811-126". the frame is solid, the tub is in ok condition, the hood, sides, doors, roof, grill, windsheild, radiator and core support are all in decent condition, with glass. the fenders, seats, gas tank, and front brakes are missing. ive got several pictures but i dont know how to post them. Im wondering what year and modle this is and if it is worth buying.

Yep- pics would help gauge the year and value. Remember though, if it's worth it to you, it doesn't matter what we think ;)

That would be a cj3B. Go get it, that is a good price.

The jeep is a CJ-3B, and from the sounds of it, it is a military version of it, known as the M606.

The serial number should be on a tag on the passenger side of the firewall or on the top of the frame on the passenger side just about where the body tub would hit the frame if the tub was on the jeep. It is tough to read this without wire brushing the frame.

Is it worth $350? You be the judge, but one in similar condition just sold on ebay for $500. It had a title, however, and an engine that supposedly ran except that it had one valve stuck.

The serial number probably begins with 453GB2 and then has a five or six digit number. the six digit numbe will be what is stamped on the frame.

The jeep would be a 1953 - 1956 model, but most likely a 1953. In 1957 they switched to a large speedo.

    good luck

M606 jeeps are kinda scarce in the US since most were sent overseas.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

sorry to sound negative, but I think I would pass
    too much missing for me
    engine turn over?
a complete running Jeep can be had for less than what you will sink into this one
If you have the time and money, go for it
I would pull the shift tower off the trans and inspect for water at least
sometimes the cheapest price really isn't the best deal
    that's my opinion

I say go for it. I dont like the PTO setup for me, but it sounds like it has the makings of a good jeep. This could be parted out if nothing else for well over the 350 price, but I think trying to put it back together would be the ticket

I got a jeep in similar condition for 200. I just held on to pieces of it and got rid of the rest. when I got my next jeep of similar vintage it had a blown tranny. so I used the one I had laying around.

**** I say buy it, but I'm all about junk..

I like part-out opportunities myself. A $200-$300 investment can double or triple it in misc. parts sales. My first part-out provided ALOT of freebies on my 2A and paid me back fast --and then some! I call it "the gift that doesn't stop giving" as I still sell odds and ends from it for $20-$50. As a matter of fact, all Jeep parts I have in "inventory" right now is free and clear! All paid back! ;)

I should have added this earlier that it isn't a good start for a buildup. It is missing alot and, besides, I'm not big on 3b's. It wouldn't be road worthy for a long time.

For parts, good investment. The complete PTO from shifter to rear unit on ebay should pay you back your investment. Everything else will essentially be freebies if you have room to store it.

Its up to you but I think this is a good Sanford & Son Opportunity :D

Like Jon, I would agree that it does have salvage value, left that out.
    I am a junker myself.
but if every component is seized up, or full of water, pass.

Turn off for me is no title/vin. Personally I see $350 worth of parts at least, if nothing else though. The top is probably a CJ5 top, but that and the good sheet metal, tailgate, hood, grill and the pto has got to be worth the money. I don't agree on just because it's running and will move it's worth it. Until you dissect it you don't know what you have.

well i went and bought it today. i talked to the PO and he came up with everything but the fenders and seats (including a vintag) and came down to $300. the tranny and t-case both still have 90 wt in them and look decent. the pto isnt ceased up and the engine will turn over by hand (po swears it ran before his son started striping it, and hes never lied to me or my buddies yet).

right now im thinking of swaping the drivetrain out for stoughter axles and a 305/th350 (have them lying around the shop begging for a good use) setting it on 33-12.50's and redoing the body.

so before I get started are there any tips or sugestion on how to go?Time isnt an issue im not in a hurry, and im a mechanic by trade so there isnt much i cannot do myself either.

Nice score... Personally, I'd leave it more in it's stock form. You'd be amazed at what it's capable of. I'd just upgrade it to 11" brakes, saginaw steering, knuckle stud conversion, and maybe an inch or 2 lift, then you'll be able to clear the 33"s and you have a cool old Jeep. I'd only go with the 305 if the existing drivetrain is junk. That and you won't be able to fit an auto in it either, the wheelbase is too short.

If it will run I would suggest putting the body back on it and getting it running and then see what needs to be replaced. My 3b had a 283 SBC in it and I just did not have a whole lot of room, and it was way to much power for stock brakes. Iwould suggest a V6.

I admit, I have 3b envy. Good score on the jeep!

With it tore down already, I'd have it all blasted before I started puting it back together.
