in VA it is one of those we are not going to bother you because it is a jeep laws. as long as you have a mirror to look out of and your leg is not out the door ( and even that gets looked past)

I think the reason was because you have to have side mirrors and when you remove the doors on some vehicles the mirrors are conected to the doors. As far as I know if you have the mirrors you should be fine.

Probably best to call your local law enforcement and get the straight skinny.

Never heard of it here in MI - don't see how you can require doors when the Jeep didn't come with them from the factory.

Hard to get a set of doors on a motorcycle too..;)

The City of San Fransisco is getting so bad in terms of wacky laws, that I wouldn't discount the doors on a motorcycle.

These are the folks that have just established building and furnishing codes for dog houses.

    Nothing like that in Ohio...
I agree with Mike about calling the local Highway Patrol Post.

No problems here in Hawaii, but I did see the MPs on base hassling a guy who had taken the doors off a S-10blazer/pathfinder/4runner whatever it was, don't recall. We have state safety inspection and I have been failed for taillight guards on my CJ7, "glasspacks" on my CJ5, a loose bellcrank (aren't they all?--had just replaced the bearings in it about 3 months earlier), "jeep jambo" stickers on the w/s, a non "DOT" marked aftermarket backup light (tractor type), and a front plate not properly secured, I used the flashlight mounts to attach it to the roller fairlead. The guy tried to pull it off to show how "unsecure" it was and after trying twice, and failing, I told him to keep his hands off my Jeep and that I would take care of it. Of course then he got an attitude and I had to have a little talk with his supervisor, who actually wasn't much help.
On the plus side I run with my w/s down all the time and only got hassled once, after I was pulled over for doing 20mph in a 15. This is noteworthy because if I try to come through the gate to Base my sticker is on the windshield and therefore can't be seen. The fact that most of the MP's either know me or at least recognize the Jeep helps.

i think what you're talking about is the mirror comment other people have said... unfortunately some cops take the mirror comment into meaning the doors since the doors are connected to the mirrors on the wrangler. i've seen a few pople show complaining and showing up in court over that one around here... and a ticket for stretching a cj and not registering it as home-built even thought the title said cj-8 / scrambler...

No problem driving without doors in Texas.

Just don't have wire cutters in the back pocket of your jeans. That is still against the law, and it has been on the books since the cattle rustling days when the bad guys would cut a barb wire fence to steal some cattle.

.. Maybe we need to clean up the books some......

If the parts are removable without removing bolts etc. Then it is legal. On my CJ5 its legal.

I believe they consider hard tops along with the doors, if the factory intended it to be removable, then it is legal. Just like Bronco's with hard tops, just a lot bigger and more of a pain in the butt to remove. Moreless its legal for a Jeep, but would not be legal to remove the doors off of lets say a Camaro and cruise around town with it, because it was never intended to be driven with the doors off. Kind of an example. Its a law I know that for sure. However, if you want to get technical I belive you could drive with your windshield down also but don't quote me on that one.

For sure you can drive with the windshield down in New Mexico. A while back I had removed the broken windshield from a 91 Toyota Camry. It needed some body repair above the windshield area. I called the State Patrol to ask if it was OK to drive the car to the body shop with no windshield. They replied "It's ok with us. It isn't illegal." I did, but it was a cold January ride.

I think winshield down is legal but eye protection is required (like motorcycles --shield, goggles, --->sunglasses are not acceptable substitutes but I think it is widely ignored now days.

I did read about the dog house gig! Only in S.F.!!! Now they want to charge consumers 17 cents for grocery "paper or plastic" :D Cali already has a "electronics recycling tax" and I hear the "Johnny pissed over the bridge tax" is close to approval! R)

Jon in most all states Sunglasses are an acceptable means of eye ptotection on a motorcycle, so they should bein a jeep with the windshield down, as they are just as shatter proof as the lens on your motorcycle helmet or racing goggles. I know this from being pulled over by several arrogant cops who infromed me, if it wasn't shatter proof it wasn't legal, well when I showed them the lens on my helmet and it said DOT approved and not shatter proof they shut up and let me go.

In TN you only need the rearview mirror. I dont think you should have a problem without doors.
At most if they say anything about side mirrors its a fix it ticket, maybe even just a warning.
Just dont act stupid and draw attention to yourself. ;)
