I don't feel like the gear is completely engaged until after my foot is off the clutch. This seems to be more in second and third and not so much in first and reverse. I have a new clutch and rebuilt tranny. I hope there is some adjustment. I am an amateur ! Thanks to all for any help

If you put your front end against a tree (or hold the brakes on) and let out the clutch, it should stall the engine.

The clutch linkage must be adjusted so the pedal has a little free-play when your foot is off the pedal. This may have changed a little when the new clutch wore in.

Just to add to Pete's post: if there isn't any free play in the clutch, the throwout bearing will be constantly riding on the pressure plate fingers. That wears the bearing out rather quickly and can ruin the clutch fingers. Bottom line is if run like that, you will be pulling the transmission/transfercase and replacing clutch parts soon. The FSM specifies 3/4" free travel at the pedal.

What engine and what clutch ?
Diaphram clutch or 3 finger type ?
Clutch control linkage should be adjusted to provide 1/16" gap between the release bearing and clutch fingers.
Hurricane engine has a clutch inspection cover on the bellhousing for that purpose.
That equates to about 1" of free travel at the pedal pad.
