I would like to redo the saginaw steering on my jeep. I have a question about the steering shaft that goes from the box to the colum. Mine has been created from parts...welded together. I want to move the location of my steering box and colum. When I do this the shaft will need to be a different length. What steering shaft should I look for? Are they adjustable in length? I will try to get pictures of my current steering shaft if needed.

    Thanks

    Tim

Flaming River and Borgeson both make high quality adjustable steering shafts.
But they are not cheap!

I think we talked on this board in the past about retrofitting a Cherokee shaft... ?
The XJ shaft has two strong ujoints instead of a weak unserviceable ujoint and a rag joint like the CJ...
Anyone recall ? Was it Bubba that gave us that info?

Thanks Zed. I've looked at your recent pics of your current conversion and it is looking good. Is the steering shaft you are using adjustable or is it fixed length?

If I use a fixed length shaft and I reposition the Box, will the location of the colum be dictated by the length of the steering shaft.

I hope that wasn't too confusing

thanks for the compliment ( when im in the middle of a project, i sometimes wonder how it's going :D )

re: the shaft. right now i am actually trying to figure out the same as you are. the shafts i have in house are all fixed length except one which only expands about 3 inches. they are all from various cjs fsj's and of course none of them fit but i may be able to cut one and then "bolt on" some new universals to each end. but since i like being able to steer at all times and dislike certain sudden "suprises" i am being conservative with the steering.

i don't want to weld to the shaft since i don't trust the welds unless i can blame them on the factory.

i may look to see if a late model wrangler has a shaft that will fit or that i can cut the end off and attach a borgeson universal. ( if it ever get warm here so i dont come back from the salvage yard missing four fingers from frostbite.. )

I can get a pic if ya like.. but the XJ's have great shafts with two good u joints that can handle some pretty wacky angles... you will have to lengthen it though.. not hard with a little welding...
