There were several directives from the US Army for the size of the markings for Viet-Nam era truck 1/4 ton cargo. A M38A1 a, b, or c model type.
You will ultimately have to decide for yourself. One place to search is the G503 website. Also use the MVPA website.

I was most comfortable with 7 1/4 side and rear stars. I hand painted 18 1/2 on the hood. Letters were 2 1/8 tall and spaced 5/8 of an inch apart.
Side stars had several locations too. One is low and just ahead of the rear wheel well. Another is low also and just behind the front wheel well. A third is behind and above the filler opening, part of that upper star is never shown.
You will need a big piece of card board to try out what looks correct, then transfer the idea with a regular #2 lead pencil. Tape and paper off everything you cannot have white ENAMEL paint on.

The Military Stencil site is really good. I'm planning to paint my M38a1 up for the Seabee's since my dad was one in Vietnam...
