I'm curious, Is the cable clutch an oddity in these jeeps? Seems from all your responses that everyone else has a mechanical linkage rather than cable. The FSM does show both, and Morgan's is cable. Might be worth doing a conversion down the road. I'm sure that mechanical would be less trouble in the long run. I appreciate the pics, etc. I think at this point a shim to reduce play in the brake pedal, and some jute, felt, or a beer cozy to seal the floor opening will have it functioning. On to the next project!
Yeah, we're having some fun now! :p

My '71 had the long (54"?) cable from the factory. I think cable was more common on the '70/71 units, although it might have been around earlier. It always seemed to work pretty well, but the cable is about half the size it should be, so it would break at inopportune times, of course. The cable might last 5 years, or it might last 6 months, you could never tell... just watch it near it's endpoints for broken strands, and replace it ASAP.
I swapped my cable out for the AA Chain clutch linkage, and I'm quite happy with it.

I think the maker/quality of the cable had a lot to do with it. The factory Jeep cables were good; aftermarket, so-so
I run the 1 piece cable on my Jeep; the cable on it now is the same one I installed new in 1983 when I did the V6 swap; yes I carry a spare cable and adjuster.
I suppose mud/water from deep fordings could cause problems as well as heat from headers/exhaust systems.
I do know that you can reach in with your hand and depress my clutch pedal very easily; I used the factory stock V6 clutch disc and p/plate.
    works very well for me

My '66 CJ5 had the cable. The secret to making them last is to coat them liberally in wheelbearing grease -- prevents rust.

I had the Jeep for 18 years and only replaced the cable once.

FWIW I think the cables are a bit better at staying operational during extreme frame/body flex, as I never noticed that happening with it.
