does anyone know where i can find a spud shaft for a reasonable price?

i occured to me that i might be able to use the intermediate steering shaft from the 87 cherokee that donated the steering column.

but it's obviously too short to reach the power steering box mounted just behind the front bumper of my hybrid 69-5 (the one with the '72 front frame end). so if i can extend the input shaft of the saginaw ps box (from a '75 -5) with a spud shaft i may not have to notch either the front member or the engine mount let alone custom order one from borgeson which means i wouldn't have to spend the $200 or so ( if i ever get it).

is it possible to make one that i could trust?

    ideas?

Zed: Is what Jerry (the Hot Rod guy) did on mine is use a DD shaft--the cheapest. Just cut the length to fit. He put a Borgson u-joint on the sagi box--to the DD shaft--to a Flaming River u-joint to the Flaming river column. Borgson u-joints only cost about $35. I think with a Borgeson bolted directly to your sagi box to your shaft, even if you have to buy a DD one (cheap) would fill your bill.

Mike: Oops! Inflation. But cheaper than FR. I've heard that Borgeson makes FR, they just plate and polish them. I have both and can't tell the difference.

You can buy a coupler and a short piece of splined shaft and hook it to the steering box and then put a u-joint between the coupler shaft and the steering shaft. This in effect gives a spud shaft.
I do have (1 spud shaft) left that I made with my originals about 2 years ago, if its the right size I might sell it, tell me what the spline count and diameter is on your steering box

    it's a pre 77 (actually from a trashed 75 cj-5) model 800 box. specs say its 13/16" +/- .015"and 36 splines

images below incl the measure from the caliper. sparky, sorry bout the image size, i'll delete em when your done.

i'll look into the other suggestions as well. it will probably be a combination of jim and mcruff's suggestions. thanks all.

Here is a picture of the last one I have left, I originally had 6 of these that I made. I sold all of them to guys on the board except mine and this one. It is made out of chromoly, the locking clamp was welded on and then stress relieved. If you are interested PM me! The tip is unfinished but is machineable to a 3/4"DD u joint, just like all the rest, if you are interested in it I will finish it.
