Did any of the 1971 cj5's come with the drawbar attached to the cross member. My frame looks a little different than others I've seen with the drawbar. My frame does not have the "v" shaped piece in the rear of the frame where the drawbar center 4 bolts attach. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My frame looks like this photo. Was there another part of the drawbar that I need? The picture at the far left has some part that I do not have attached to the center top of the drawbar. Where do I get that part or do I even need it?

Hi Julius - the V-shaped frame member (including that top plate) and long straps were for jeeps that still had the under-seat tank - no rear mounted tank. Don't know if your 71 would have had a rear tank (or someone later installed one) but the V member does not work with a rear tank, nor do the long straps. The drawbar came off my jeep and I have the V frame member - I intend to cut-out the V in order to install a rear tank. If you are running a rear tank, the straps will not be usable (and I can also confirm that one of the straps was 'upside down' for some reason as we briefly discussed - but I am sure you already figured that out ;))

Cannot tell about how that 'top' plate with the 4 mount holes works without the V member for factory rear tank set-ups, but the straps are replaced with shorter mounting brackets to the outside of the frame members. I think Colojeepguy posted some pics of those side frame brackets recently from his set-up. Edit- I just noticed the pic you posted on photobucket has the side frame mounts as well.

Sorry the replacement isn't as seamless as would be nice, but I am sure someone can point you in the right direction for the top plate.

Check the vin number, might have built in '70 and titled in '71, not the first time this has happened.
A underseat gas tank would be a big clue.

I'm pretty sure on small picture is correct for a '71, including the L shaped bracket on the top..

Thanks guy's. Yes mine has the rear gas tank. I don't think I have that "L" shaped bracket that you see in the photobucket picture.

the L shaped bracket just bolts to under side of rear floor pan , one other question about rear end . looks to be from 72 or later . center section rear end . and its just me . I would think that your going to have problems with driveshaft angle . have you thought about a D20 transfer case or put the off set rear end back in

This is for '74-75, but '71 should be nearly the same.

None of the pictures of the jeep frames are mine. I think Tim has identified what mine should look like. Thanks for all you help. Especially James Orofino for selling me the drawbar.
