I've got two of the original German "Gerry" cans, with the cam type lid. I do carry them on the tire rack, always full. They seal better and I'm sure are tougher than the underseat gas tank..............

I'm going to mount one on each side of my spare. Even though I have a 34" tire, I figure instead of mounting them the traditional way where they are widthwise across the back, i will turn them 90* so they go widthwise from the tub.

I normally (read too lazy to remove it for months at a time) have my Jerry can mounted outside. Maybe they just don't care in Kansas.

Also, due to the design of my hard top doors, my underseat tank vents inside. Every Kelly Bonanza III or standard hard top that I have seen has the same doors covering the fuel tank mouth.

I don't think fumes from a good Jerry can would be anything compared to my tank splashing around. Just don't leave it parked in the sun with the top up while in the Arizona/ California desert.

Edit----> I REALLY think that bright red can might be a strong reminder not to tailgate. I have never noticed someone tailgating me in the CJ5, despite the occasional trip on a 65 mph 2 lane highway with my chugging along anywhere from 45-60 mph.
