Sorry been working on another project , then the flu bug stopped by our house for a few weeks............

Lots of folks talking about seats in these CJ-5's. And for the most part unless your going to do a wheel tub notch , most high backs or suspension type seats just will not fit very well in an early CJ-5............These are stock mid 70's AMC CJ5 frames that were recovered once years back and then recently I had a member here called "Stitch" work his magic again on these old frames one more time............ In the second photo the seats have been rebuilt with additional padding and support and recovered with some more modern materials.
While he was at it , I also had him install some aftermarket seat heaters in both seats....... these were made by Champion seat systems (www.championseatheaters.com) ...........using there carbon fiber pads , one pad in the base and one in the mid back to lower back area.........comes with a two position dual temperature switch for each seat.........this should really add a nice level of instant comfort on those cold mornings when nothing seems to build any heat. Looking forward to checking this out.

I can't wait to hear how you like those heaters. I'm shopping for the brand of seat heater I'll toss in my Jeep this summer.

Moving on here .................I needed a new rear bumper after dismantling the old plow hitch variety on the rear to put a fuel tank back there so here is what I came up with: 4"x 2" x ,250 wall tubing. tapered cut on the ends, HD towing attachments, and a standard receiver hitch........this will also perhaps be my 2 gallon air storage tank as long as I can seal it up.......well have to wait on that!

Amazing what you are doing. Of course, helps to have good tools.

    Beautiful...

I'll be using a 'hand mill' to do mine. The drill, the hacksaw, square, some d.blue, a compass, a hammer and a punch, the mill bastard file and then a whole lotta magic, smoke and mirrors. some test fitting, filing and then may be some welding...toss a few chicken bones around, jab the voodoo doll, chant in tongue and it'll Likely take me a day rather than an evening...

    Amazing work terry,

I just picket up a set of shackle mounts of ebay from a guy on the jeepforum his are nice, but yours look top notch.
when you plate the tube. I noticed you beveled the actual square tube, did you bevel the plate on the sides? just curious
I assume you used your mill to cut the rounded edge on the shackle mounts too?

Dane, Piffey, Mike ..........thanks and your right It does help to have some of the right equipment........although I don't have it all as space limits that.
Piffey , I relieved that area with a bevel so that I could remove some material and continue the radius of the existing tube into that tapered cut on the end.......more aesthetics than anything else just trying to make the ends look more like they were formed rather than being fabricated.........And on the tow hooks the radius on the ends were roughed in first on the band saw and then ground on a 6" wide vertical belt sander to the final shape.
Steve............Yep , us old dudes can get the job done......maybe not quite as fast as we would like to!

Very nice work Terry. Have you thought about a tire carrier attachment to the bumper? I'm betting you have something in mind. And ya, old dudes rule!

Nice Terry. Did you make it original width or bob it a bit? I tossed that around for quite awhile when putting the new rear tank in the B but finally opted for a bob job. Otherwise, very similar to yours.

Oh, and those seats turned out really well!

Posi..............Thanks & Yep , I do have a spindle / bearing style swing away mount I built , but that may be one of the last things I install after a suitable swing away style tire carrier has been well thought out!

Duffer.........this bumper is 54.5" wide which is 5" less than the body width.........If my calculations are correct it will still hold about 2 gallons of air which is not bad since trying to find a suitable 2 gallon round air tank to mount elsewhere is normally about 6-7 " in diameter and 19" inches long which does pose under chassis clearance issues............I like the Idea about using the bumper, just not sure yet how I will get it clean enough inside
( grindings , slag & rust wise ) to make it suitable for air without it creating a nightmare..........glad you like the seats , I think those seat heaters for old dudes will come in handy!

More Pictures of the bumper as it got tack welded together.........

TOW HOOKS SHAPED TO FIT CAVITY'S IN BUMPER AND 45 DEGREE RELIEF CUT FOR WELDING ,
FYI: THAT MATERIAL IS 1"X 2" COLD ROLLED 1018 STEEL WITH A 15/16" HOLE

RELIEVED AREA TO CREATE A LARGE PLUG WELD ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE BUMPER FOR THE TOW HOOKS
    [IMG]
TOW HOOK TACKED IN PLACE ON BACK SIDE OF BUMPER.......THIS METHOD WITH THE SOLID ONE PIECE TOW
HOOK GOING THROUGH FROM FRONT TO BACK AND PLUG WELDED MAKES THE TOW HOOK INCREDIBLY
STRONG. ONCE FINISHED I'LL FILL THAT AREA IN WITH WELD AND GRIND IT SMOOTH.

THE RECEIVER HITCH TUBE ALSO EXTENDS THOUGH THE TUBE TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BUMPER ,
CAN'T FINISH THAT YET TELL I SEE HOW MUCH CLEARANCE I HAVE BETWEEN IT AND THE NEW 20 + GALLON FUEL TANK I'M BUILDING .

Posi, you asked about a swinging tire carrier mount for my bumper ? Here is the swinging bearing base that I will embed in the bumper once I get this project far enough along to figure out what the carrier will consist of. I made this one using common Ford spindle bearings......the axle is just 1018 Cold-rolled bar stock & DOM tubing

Lots of old holes in this body.......and Yep! I drilled them all.........must have been crazy! Even an extra set for the two soft tops over the years...........going to plug them all up and start from scratch.........Using the Tig welder with silicon bronze rod. Once done I'll grind them off a little and then get the body hammer and dolly out and work the metal nice and flat should look almost new when I'm done!.....Who said this was easy?

Thanks, But Patience?............I'm probably like most folks and do like to see progress. It's hard right now to clear my plate enough to spend as much time in the shop as I would like to.........but I'm working on it!
