I want to order a new HEI distributor but I'm undecided on which one to go with. I know CRT had some problems in the past but I think they've fixed the gear problem or worst case I can swap out my stock gear onto the new HEI to solve the issue.

I've also hear good things about the Summit brand HEI's. Is anyone on here running one?

What they said. Knowing what's being worked with helps with answering questions.

A '73 304 has a Delco ditributor that uses a Kettering trigger (points). If it were mine, and I wanted a significant ignition upgrade, I would use the points to trigger a MSD capacitive-discharge module. This turns the points into a low-voltage switch, and the coil charge-discharge is handled by the MSD module. The points can always be used as points again, should the MSD module fail ... a built-in backup! And the MSD module with your original coil will give you a nice, hot spark. Or pick the hot coil of your choice, and keep your original coil as a spare (all Jeepers should carry a spare ignition coil - BTDT).

If you want the big cap and HEI wires, I recall the MSD Cap-Adapt for their distributor fits the Delco distributors, and that takes the big Ford/Motorcraft cap. Then buy your favorite HEI style wires.

This would avoid the HEI gear-destruction scenario entirely by using your existing gear on the existing distributor body that matches your existing cam gear. No worries.

I run standard points, standard cap and distributor, with an MSD 6A. It starts and runs perfectly and smooth. I got a blue cap because I read where the black cap has more carbon that may cause cross fire. You will need spiral wound plug wires if you don't have them already.

Wiring it up is fairly easy.

petronix ignition, about $100.00. it uses your current dist ,replacing the points to electronic ignition. carry a set of points with you and if it ever fails you can reinstall the points and go in just a few minutes. I have never used it, but have heard great things about it. was going to use it but a free HEI landed in my lap.

turns out my stepdad ordered me a DUI setup. When I wire it up can I use the pink COIL hot wire to wire it up or should I use another wire?

You model jeep should have two wires to the coil plus. A green and the pink. the pink is a special resistant wire to the ignition switch and the green one goes to the starter relay. The DUI instructions that come with it should instruct you as to what you should do. Let us know if you have any problems.

Use a new 12gauge wire from the ignition switch to the distributor.

'73 wiring is basically the same as '74 wiring. Look here at the wiring diagram - http://oljeep.com/edge_74_tsm.html - they do not have a fuse box. Instead they have strategically placed inline fuses.

The ignition switch is powered through wire A12A which connects to the big splice. The splice is connected directly to the battery via the starter solenoid. I don't see it on the diagram, but there may be a fusible link in series there. If so, that is the only protection for the ignition - no fuse.

Then you'll have to follow the wiring diagram from EZ Wire. But I expect the ignition is still not fused.

The 12g coil wire is that's why I'm asking if I can use it

If it's 12 gauge and there is no resistor in the circuit, i.e. full 12v, then it should be no issue.
Putting all the info, like you were using an aftermarket wiring harness, in the original post could have saved a lot of time for you and us;)
