I installed my T90 and D18 combo a few months back without a gasket between them. Today, while looking online for a gasket for the pto cover for the 18 I saw a 'Texas' shaped gasket. mehh

My question is is that what I think I saw in the picture? If so, is that a critical gasket? Pretty sure I know the answers to those but I want to make sure....

    Thanks,
    Lance

The "Texas" shaped gasket is for between the transmission and transfer case. It should be there. It not only acts as a gasket but also a "shim" to locate the transfer case bearing and gear depth in relation to the transmission.
There are different "Texas" shaped gaskets so make sure you get one for a small hole transfer case with the cut outs for the idler shaft protrusions on the back of the transmission.

Your signature shows you have a 66 with V6 so it should of originally had a T-86AA tranny which is for a big hole D-18.. The T-86AA rear bearing retainer ring is used on the T-90 to match the original D-18 unless the T-90/D-18 combo (original small hole) was changed as a completed unit.

    Does the gasket look right?

I think my output shaft slid too far back.... this doesn't look right to me. I can't get the d18 back on.

I bought the d18 and T90 combo. It was rebuilt and sitting in a shop locally

Gasket looks right - the shaft does look too far back (from memory).

    I THINK I see a problem...the same problem I had.
It LOOKS like your locking plate is not trimmed so that it'll fit in the recess of the D18...

ETA: I don't know about the shaft.

The I just took the 18 off this weekend so the locking plate shouldn't be an issue. It went together fine last time I fooled with it.

If you just took it off this past weekend there's no reason why it shouldn't go back together just fine. The gasket isn't the issue. You might try starting the bolts & slowly tightening them while jiggling/fitting the transfer on.

I'm just concerned about my output shaft looking like it's pushed out. I tried pushing it back in but it's not going

Check your bearing to make sure it's seating right as well. I don't remember the spacer being out that far, I believe it should be closer to the retainer. Unfortunately, I don't have one to look at any longer that is together.

Geeze...I'm such a dip...& I seem to have a problem with internet pictures & reading comprehension... maybe it's just old age taking its toll.
The only manual transmission I've had to deal with in the past 35 years or so was my T86, which I sent to Herm for a rebuild with T90 guts.
Looking closer at the pictures, there is something definitely wrong with your tranny IF it is supposed to look anything like a T86 back at the rear bearing retainer. Mine was flush with the rear of the case IIRC.
