I've started tearing down my new 69CJ5. It has been sitting for years, last registration was in 96. I added marvel mystery oil to the cylinders, then turned over by hand, then jumped the starter which did turn the engine over aft I removed it and freed the starter up. The wiring harness was toast with melted wires and numerous pigtails of all types, so I have removed most of it. I would like to find out the condition of the motor so I know what to do with it during my tear down. I'm not that skilled or knowledgeable when it come to this so was looking for some suggestions on how to proceed . Everything the PO did looks shoddy. It does appear that the engine was removed at some point. The block and intake numbers indicate it is still a 225. Here are some photos including broken dipstick [IMG][IMG]http://i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p721/jpeters475/bth_Photo486_zps412eb486.jpg[IMG]

You should at the very least drain the old oil....and change it and before turning it over much more ...........getting a prime to the oil pump by removing the distributor would also be a good Idea.
If it was me I would probably pull the heads and see if you have rust on the walls and or water in the cylinders..............if it has been sitting a long time sometimes the head gaskets will seep and allow water in..........turning it over or starting it with any rust on the cylinder walls or not being properly primed with oil will further any damage. Also the fuel in the tank and carb has probably turned to gel...........you'll be able to smell it.

Thanks. Pulled the gas tank... was going to hook up something direct. the fuel pump seems different from stock, the return line is y'ed back to the feed line, and the original fuel pump only shows one line. the distributor, wires and coil are in pretty bad shape. thought about replacing all( including carb) and changing oil before going any farther. I guess I should also pull the heads first. Hate to put to much into it if it is wasted. I guess pulling the heads would be a good start. Unfortunately the po died several years ago so I a am pretty much flying blind. It appears to be a delco dist.

You will not know what condition it is in until you pull the heads and look..............running those pistons up and down with any debris like carbon or rust in the cylinders may score them to the point that even boring it .060 over may not fix it!
If it's rebuildable just take your time while taking it apart and inspect all the pieces while limiting the damage............then move forward.

It's a long road, but fear not. I just put my '68 away for the winter, but the last run in it was probably the best it's run in 25 years (guessing). Last registered in '97, I had to replace the gas tank, fuel pump, battery, steering linkage, wheel cylinders and shoes all around, tires, heater core, some brake lines, and most recently the entire wiring harness. I finally disconnected the exhaust air pump (which from your pictures looks likes has already been removed from yours) and did a proper ignition timing. I was those last two that really made it hum, and almost even quietly.

I really need to put a pic up here of my brake light improvisation. Just need to put some sta-bil in it now.

If you have the spare time to work on it, you'll be happy with that :v6:.

    Cheers
