I got some shop time in last weekend and got my spare tire carrier built. Just wanted to share, I made this out of a bunch of scrap I had laying around. So total cost to build was 6.99 for the paint.

Awesome! Thinking of adding a third brake light?

    Nice!
That's a near duplicate of the one I built for mine about 12 years ago.
Its a good setup because the frame takes most of the load, the pins thru the tailgate holes just keep it upright.
I put a 3rd brake light on mine, right in the middle of the wheel.

Here's a close up of the hinge. Just a simple rod, and pipe hinge.

    perfect, Thank you so much.

I been looking at quite a few different tire carrier options and this style seems to be the easiest and simpliest compared to whats on the vernco site, or building a rear bumper with spindle etc.

Thanks for the info. What is interesting is that you can move it away if you need to use the tailgate and keep it open.

Here's my version. It's held up for over a decade of 4-wheeling & washboard gravel roads. I used the box from the side mount spare to put the tire on, and I use 3/8 implement pins to hold it & the tailgate closed (I almost never use the tailgate)
MarkK's hinge is much nicer than mine...

I had been thinking of building the swing out bumper type. And with Alan's thread of the side mount spare, and the picture of a old back mounted carrier in the for sale section I came up with mine. I like the brake light in the center. My wife bought me a cover for my birthday a year or two ago  that I gotta run for a while.

My next task is to get the rust under control. I have liked the not perfect paint, as I don't feel bad if it gets scratched off road. Now I'm at the point that I gotta do some thing with the rust.
