ok. Decentish running 225.. Makes sense that if once in a while, every couple of days/weeks, at rough idle it spits flame out the sides, I'm looking at some kinda timing issue right? Timing chain? I do bodywork and electrical but I've never really gotten into engine mechanics..

Something in the ignition? regulator, switch, coil? Carbon tracks in cap? Do you have HEI?

    heck.. probably...

Not yet... So it's possible that it's just something ignition related? I figured that if it was spewing from the exhaust it was still injecting fuel while in the compression or exhaust cycles of the engine?? dunno...

so i guess i should just replace everything else first and see what happens

    Injecting fuel:?
It's still carburated, isn't it? It won't pull fuel into a given cylinder unless the exhaust valve is closed, the intake valve is open, and the piston is travelling down. Sounds like you might have a timing issue, or a weak spark................

complicated as a sticking exhaust valve or as simple as running waaaay too rich and burping some raw fuel into the exhaust, got any odd noises in the valve train??

Start with the easiest--- running to rich. check your carb - i.e. pull the cleaner and look down into it with a flash light. If you see fuel running into it, adjust it. Plus to make sure it aint the carb, readjust the fuel to air mixture. Second -- hook a timing light up to every plug wire individually and see if there is any "GAP" in the spark. This would tell you that a certain cylinder is not firing everytime. Possible points, contacts, condenser, cap, etc. Third -- check the timing, if your 180 out and on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke, it will ignite and throw flames.

I had the same thing with my jeep. it was the coil that went. I had 1 foot flames shooting out of the exhaust, it was really cool ;)
