I came across a D30 out of a '72 CJ5 for sale. I've been looking for a D30 for about 6 months and haven't found anything until now. The axle has 4.88's (which is what I was going to swap in) and a Powr-Lok which was rebuilt and tightened up last year and has about 2 trail runs on it. The 4.88's are about 6 or 7 years old and are Spicer units. It has D44 outer knuckles and is set up for high steer with 1.25"x.25" DOM tie rod and drag link with 1-ton Chevy tie rod ends. Right now, it has perches on it for a spring over, but still has the original perches too. Also, it has Warn Premium hubs and drum brakes. I'm okay with the drums because that's what I was going to run for now anyway. Anyway, the guy is asking $400 with the high steer stuff or $300 without it. What do you guys think? I guess if I price everything out to do to another axle, I'd be in it for a lot more than $400. This is going to be a D27 replacement and I plan on running spring-under and tires no bigger than 33's in the future. Thanks.

Rebuilding a D30 to stock with parts from a house like 4WDH would cost 3 to 4 times that price. Sounds like a pretty good deal.

If you plan to install it SUA, check your caster after the install. You may need to install some steel shims; I did when I installed a '74 D30. Added 5 degree shims to give me a caster of 6 degrees positive. Prior to the shims it was uncontrollable over 30 mph.

Around here - that's a GREAT price. Sum of the parts is much, much higher than that. Heck, Warn premium hubs are over $100 alone. Add the limited slip, the gears, and the fact that the brakes are there and you've got a great deal - IMO.

Sounds very similar to the deal I got on mine, but then I had to pay $100 to have mine shipped. I'd say it is a pretty darn good deal.

    Used NT D30 $300
    Gears $180
    Gear set up kit $85
    Aussie Locker $200
    Hi Steer arms $150
    Heim Joins $29 ea. x 4
    1.125 Chromoly tubing $80
    Perches to do SOA $30
    Disc brake conversion $100

    Total -----------

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to give that guy a call and go take a look at the axle. The only thing is it's still in the Jeep:rofl:, and I don't really want to make two trips at two hours each way. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Well, I went and took a look at that D30 yesterday. He took the diff cover off too so I could take a look around. The only thing I found was the pinion gear had some chips on a couple of teeth, but the ring gear looked fine. As for the high steer, I realized that with spring under, I wouldn't be able to use it. So, we settled on $250 for the axle without the high steer. He's going to take the axle out next week and I'll pick it up next weekend. I'll have to keep an eye out for a stock D30 tie rod and drag link to use since the high steer is out. Thanks again guys.
