So I decided to nix the fuel cell in favor of a rear tank. I purchased the whole assy from a '76 CJ and thought I could just cut out the x member and fit it in there. WRONG. The Willys is 2" shorter from cross member to rear bumper. So the best solution I can think of is to cut out the rear member between the frame rails and weld a new bumper onto the old one . This will give me the extra 2" I need and also give the rear of the tub a little protection from the "back up into the rock" problem. I haven't got it done yet but will post pics when I do if anyone interested. The only little extra mod I need to overcome is adding a charcoal canister to my system so that I don't have to use a vented cap. I'm looking for the right one to use as I only want to run a vent line to the sending unit and one other line from the canister to the carb. Don't want any extra vacuum lines if I can help it. Any suggestions there would be appreciated.

That's an interesting solution to your problem, I've never heard of anyone trying that before. I'd be interested to see how it turns out. post lots of pics!

I welded up my own tank but out-boarded the rear cross member (2 x 3 x1/4" rectangular tube) for the same reason-a couple more gallon capacity in the tank. My version is bolted via 1/4" plates both on top of the frame and along the out side. It bolts through the frame into billet inserts I machined to fit inside the frame rails but just a plate would likely suffice. The rear legs of my roll bar bolt into the plate on top of the frame via a flex mount.

It will open up all kinds of opportunities for things such as recovery points, receiver hitches, and various attacments.
