The Warn OD does not require the shifter unless you plan to take it out of OD at some point. Most people that I know, that have an OD, leave it in OD all the time unless they go offroad. I am betting this person planned to reach under and take it out manually from underneath, I know a guy that does that also

If I get one I will be leaving it in OD all the time also

Yes, you can do that, but you will actually get a little better mileage and less clutch wear using it like it is supposed to be. You could carry your reasoning a bit farther and just use high gear all the time also-you can do that with a V8 and 5.38's but 4.27's might give you a clutch lining scented de-oderizer.

I don't really see that as carrying the logic further. Using high gear all the time would definitely burn your clutch out where as just leaving the OD engaged will hardly change anything.

If you have 5.38's and an OD that makes the final drive 4.04 - which is of course HIGHER than the 3.73 axle gears that come in many Jeeps. Now I will give you that using the OD all the time with 4.27 gears might be hard on the clutch as it gives you a final ratio of 3.20, but it should be pointed out that is almost exactly the same ratio as what came in many Wagoners.

The difference being of course is that when you leave the OD engage it does not change the gear spanning. Attempting to take off in high gear gives you no gear spanning and is extremely hard on the clutch

From what I have seen people get better gas mileage leaving the OD engaged all the time, which is one of the reasons they do it.

I have the V6 with 4.88s and the span between 2nd and 3rd is a bit far, especially on hills.
I use 1st, 2nd, 2ndOD and then shift to third with both levers at once, then 3rdOD.
