I know that if I'm going to add a filter with a return, the return port has to be at the 12 o'clock position. But, if the 12 o'clock position is below the fuel inlet to the bowl, fuel will drain out of the bowl won't it? Or is there a check valve in the filter?

No the fuel inlet to the Holley is at the top of the bowl and the fuel will not back-flow out of the carb.

I'm trying to figure the best place to run the steel return line. My influent I have running on top of the drivers side frame rail along with my vapor line. That leaves no room there, so I'm thinking inside the frame rail. This will require running it closer to the exhaust to get it routed from above, around the top of the c channel, to get to the inside. It also would seem to introduce more metal to metal points of contact possibly causing abrasions from vibrations. I could slide rubber hose over the steel fuel line at the areas of rubbing. What do you think?
