No, not some kind of wacky omelette. I'm talking about that nut that holds the yoke onto the output shaft on yer transfer case. Ya' know, the ones that are torqued to like, a bazillion lb.ft. I'm replacing the seals on the Dana 18, in the JEEP. Well, I was scratchin' my mellon, tryin' to figur another way to hold that shaft from spinnin' while removing the nut. I'm actually working on the back end of a Dana 18, with the parking brake so, technically, it's the flange, not a yoke. I haven't finished my homemade yoke wrench yet and, it wouldn't work in this situation anyway. I could use the old pipe wrench again. That's what I did to get the front one off. But, I didn't want to hold the front yoke while taking the back nut off. Hmmm, if I could just hold that parking brake drum. Keep it from spinning. Victrola!!!! It hit me. And it worked great. Maybe it will work for someone else. Have yet to see if it works for reassembly.

So simple. Can't believe I didn't figure this one out many years ago. Cheers to those that did.

that is brilliant.... using a jack stand. I will remember that one.

I had a different issue when I had to pull mine off, mine was missing majority of the drum, shoes etc..

I used to just put the parking brake on, and/ or put the transmission in first and the transfer in low range.

I'll use that method, Patrick, if using air tools to remove the nut. Unfortunately, my little compressor gave up about 2 weeks ago. Also, I usually have to chock the wheels when using this method because the JEEP wants to roll, and the engine will spin. Of course, this would not happen if I ever had a parking brake that wasn't oil soaked and limited in it's actual usefulness. Another reason for eventually going to 11 inchers with the parking brake assembly inside.

That's how this happened, holding drum with jack stand removing flange from my 57' last year.

Ouch. That bites. I didn't suffer the same result. It went back together fine, using the jack stand method. That 220 lb.ft. is a pull, though, ain't it. Got to use my new torque wrench, finally. Gotta put the drive shaft in it, fill it up, etc. I started her up, though, for a few minutes. Started on the 3rd crank after sitting for like 10 months. Yippee!!!!!
