...they slowed me down a little today while I put new brake shoes on. The service manual says the "L" and "R" stamped into the ends of them indicate thread rotation, but that clearly wasn't the case. According to the FSM, the one stamped "L" would go on the passenger side and the one stamped "R" would go on the driver side. Maybe that's how the original equipment was, but these adjusters were obviously marked according to the left and right side of the Jeep. I'm pretty sure I did it right--to back off on the brakes, I have to hold the adjuster lever away--to tighten, I just turn the wheel and let it click against the lever. And my rear adjusters were installed opposite of the way they are supposed to be, assuming a 1972 rear D44 adjusts in reverse?...my 66-71 FSM says the rear for those years adjusts during forward braking...did I do this right?? I have "L"'s front and rear on the left side of the Jeep and "R"'s on right side...(I need to get an Intermediate FSM too, since my Jeep is a Hybrid in every way except fuel economy).

L typically goes on left side of vehicle and R on the right. Sounds like possibly a mis print in your manual. If you turn the adjuster the correct direction so the arm keeps it from turning the opposite direction and the shoes are expanding then they are installed correctly. They should self adjust when backing up and you apply and release the brakes. This is for the Bendix style self adjusting brakes.
