Well, I haven't been here in while.....I am tearing down my CJ6 for restoration. I am having problem pulling the steering wheel/shaft.

    1) I have removed the clamp at the base of the shaft housing but the whole shaft assembly will not pull out. Am I required to open up the ross box and remove a pin or something?

    2) I am having trouble removing the wheel. A puller only results in busting up the plastic base of the wheel. There are no bolt holes or anything to grab onto in the middle to pull the wheel. Nut, horn, washer removed. Is there something I am missing?

BTW, my books were no help here....thanks for any advice.

I assume you are dealing with a ross box. You can pull the shaft out without opening the box by removing the 3 screws on the flange at the bottom of the column tube and working the worm past the sector shaft. If you do this you will have to pull the box out of the jeep to put the whole thing back together because the worm bearings will fall into the box. I would recommend pulling the entire box anyway. I recently did this on my CJ and wound up "tapping" the steering wheel loose from underneith with a large dead blow hammer. (rubber type with the little beads inside) I had to rebuild my steering box anyway so pulling the whole mess was in the works. I laid the column across the bench with the wheel hanging off the end to give some swinging room, then tapped each spoke of the wheel in a circle until the hub came loose. it helps to keep the nut on the end of the shaft a few threads to keep the wheel from flying when it comes loose. hope this helps. .02 Randy

For the steering wheel, get a bearing separator and place it behind the wheel. Then you can use a regular puller to attach to the separator. Works like a charm.

    Thanks for the quick reply....

Yes, I am pulling everything and doing a complete.

I did see a good write up on pulling the wheel, none of the tricks have worked. I have not tried drilling and taping holes yet. I assume I can find a replacement wheel.

I see the three bolts your talking about....let me do it that way. Thanks so much.

try soaking nut in oil, thinner the better (ATF). use an impact wrench, that's how i removed the one from my 'parts' jeep. you could also rent/borrow/steal a "steering wheel puller" to remove it.

<edit> almost forgot, use the "blue wrench" as a last resort: heat the nut till it glows red, then tap several times w/bfh, then use the impact. the nut will come off either by the the threads or being sheared by the impact. use only as last resort.

site. it might work if you first clean the return wheel well to get rid of the oxidized rubber, dirt and oil.

On the CJ3B page there is a detailed discussion of how to do this. It is simplicity in itself.

I would not take the worm gear (steering tube) out of the box. It is too easy to remove the steering wheel using the 3B page technique.

I have done at least a dozen steering wheels from '46 to '71 and it is not hard at all.
