I don't have an intermediate FSM, but I do have a D30 front axle in my 69. Is there a torque value for the preload on the wheel bearings? I torqued them to 50 lbs-ft based on info I got from another site, but I don't wanna burn them up if that's too tight. I tried the search...thanks.

IIRC, you tighten the inner nut until the bearing begins to bind, then back it off either an 1/8 or 1/4 turn (I can't remember which). After that the outer nut gets torqued to 50 ft-lbs.

Thanks Joe, Ive done it that way in the past, backing it off one flat of the nut or 1/6, but I could never get the bearing to bind. Does that means the wheel stops turning? I couldn't achieve that. I found the 50lbs-ft number on the web but I'm not sure if the poster got that number from the service manual.

this is from the dana 30 service manual
"torque inside nut to 50 ft lbs. rotate hub, then back off 90* maximum. assemble lock washers. assemble outer locknut and torque to 50 ft lbs minimum. torque flange bolt to 20-30 ft lbs" don't forget to bend tabs accordingly.
