OK the Buick 231 is sputtering and stalling on a incline. What do you guys think it could be Im leaning towards the carb. But what on the carb would make it stall out on inclines. It runs perfect on flat but its probably running a little rich. Is it the float or what do you think?

Have a look at that float, and check for crud in the bottom of the float bowl while you are in there too. Also, if you load the engine up against the emergency brake, does it sputter the same way, or is it strong then? If it dies easily this way, you may have a weak fuel pump that can't keep up with the engine's demands. Does the engine oil smell like gasoline?

Probably need to lower your float a tad, and extend the vent tubes with some copper tubing.

This happened to me once.. My tach wire broke so my tach quit working, I didn';t think much of it. It was a really old tach. Anyhow every time I went up hill it would sputter and stall. I could not figger it out so I turned around and drove home (mostly downhill). When I got home I found the tach to coil wire laying between my headers so everytime I went uphill it swung back to my header and grounded the coil... amazing how simple the fix was but baffled me to no end on the trail....

A simple look under the hood for the obvious is advised,(not making fun af anybody, we all have missed the obvious from time to time). But it sounds like a float adjustment is in order. As for the coil agains the headers, Isnt it funny how these things make a good mech look bad sometimes.Best of luck

Well I do have a HEI distributor and all the wires are hooked up correctly Im thinking that it may just be junk in the float bowl. Is it easy to get to the float while the carb is on the jeep?
