    O.K. I got it.
Yeah your project sounds very do-able.
Hope it works out to your liking.

You should run away from whoever it was that was telling you about matching spline counts between the D27 and the D30. It's nonsensical at best.

Sorry for the delay on following up. After a lot of your comments and a bit a research I decided to not take it to that shop. I didn't know but I work with a guy that has a little shop and his hobby is restoring old trucks. He has all the tools and he said basically what you all where saying, No need to count splice because its a drum to drum swap. Thank you all for all the info and all your help. Ill post pics when I'm finished.

Are instalation kits really necessary to instal the ring and pinion?

It depends on whether or not you can re-use your old bearings and whether you have enough shims. The installation kits usually have a little container of marking compound and will also have a new locking nut.
I have done contact pattern checks using a large magic marker to color the gear teeth, and the contact pattern is apparent where the dark ink is wiped off leaving bright metal to show.

Thanks for the info. What rotation should I be looking for?

Because this R&P set is going into a front axle, the rotation is opposite to the normal gearset. When you look at a diagram of the 'drive' and 'coast' side of the ring gear teeth in the FSM, just switch these labels for a gearset in a front axle.
Is this what your question meant?

Sounds like I'm a little late on this post but in Sacramento I really like Specialized 4wd. It's a funky little place off florin Perkins but there is some really knowledgable guys there and the prices are reasonable. The guy that sits at the counter is a wiz with the 225.
