For tapered axle shaft (2 piece) dana 44 rears, do some have a one piece hub/drum combo? I just pulled apart an axle I got and the splines on the lugs seem to extend through the drum, making it seem like the drum is press fit onto the hub, though it could just be rust and corrosion sticking the 2 together. On 2 of my other Dana 44s the drums came off the hubs relatively easily.

two piece axle, you need to take off dust cap. This will hold a large nut with a cotter pin in it. Remove the cotter pin then loosen nut. Attach a hub puller to it and the drum will separate from the backing plate.

Hub puller looks like this or something simuler

Just a note you will see a square hole were the key will be this will confirm your tapered axle, and you might want to spray some penetrating oil and sometimes you have to back off the shoes off the drum.
Be sure to leave that nut on but loosened when the drum comes off it really comes off.

    Hope this helps.

I got the hub and drum off the axle shaft using a similar style puller but they came off as one unit. The hub and drum appear pressed together. I could press or sledge them apart but I cant tell if there supposed come apart routinely. Most drums come easily off the hub.

I think I figured it out. I was searching on other terms and found a reference to some studs being swaged to fit snugly in the drum which would be what I have.
