Where to get this panel???

This is the worst part of my CJ6. I have researched but cannot find a replacement panel. The cancer ends just past the fuel tank. Someone had replaced this panel in the past (note the intermediate 'jeep' logo, however this is an early CJ. I get the feeling I'm going to need a donor or fab it up. I'm avoiding fabbing it up from scratch since I'm just learning MIG. What do you fellas think?

I was wondering if there was a vendor who makes the complete piece...which includes the section above the fuel filler.

I have never seen one as the complete piece, might be on your own there.

 

The fuel filler inset is a separate part.

You could get the complete side panel as a repair part from Jeep, but those are long gone.

Do you have air? I suggest you get a little sand blaster from Harbor Freight and start blasting the areas where the cancer is. Once you get the paint and rust off, you can assess how much steel you need to cut out. That panel is fairly simple, and you should be able to make patch panels from flat steel.

For the letters, your best path is probably to cut out the intermediate Jeep letters and fill in with plain steel. Then splice in the proper JEEP stamping. Usually the cowl is all that's left from a completely rusted body, so you should be able to scavenge a rectangle of steel with the Jeep letters.

You could try J&W in Antelope, CA - I'm sure they would sell you the panels you need if they have them.

Not that I'm opposed to bullet holes, it's just that I needed more panel to the rear than this one had to offer. I think this fella was in pretty good shape before it was scavanged. It must be nice to have steel like this out west.

They parted with more than 1/2 the entire side panel for $200.00. They knew exactly where to cut the back section for my 6 project without too much discussion. It'll be on the way to NH by Monday....Nice.

No, because this CJ6 is a 1965. The replacement would be the corrrect stamping. My project has the correct 'JEEP" on the passenger side.

At some point in the 70's, this jeep must have had damage on the driver's side and the paner replaced with what was available. I'm very surprised it rusted so quickly. Honestly, the passenger side of this jeep is in very good condition. Here she is;



By the way, it's not really a puke green color, that's algae and mould. I believe the color is Champagne.

 

Interesting. Those bullet holes are stickers - note that the shadows go in two different directions. And they are the same sticker.

Possible that these tubs are from wrecks. Last time I was at Scotty's in Fontana CA (closed now unfortunately) they had a wrecked Jeepter that hit a pole or other obstacle. They were piecing it out, just like this. Never been to J&W - it would be an interesting travel destination - I wonder if they will let you in the yard?

Wow, interesting to see they still had any of that Jeep left. I bought the front fenders off that same Jeep about 3 years ago. At the time it had just come in the yard, and was fairly complete. It had not been wrecked, I think somebody had it that just wasn't interested in fixing it up. I have seen a lot worse starts for a restoration.
Yes, J&W will let you wander around their yard. Just watch out for the wasps in the summertime.

I was in J&W last October and it was a mere shadow of what it used to be in fact a year earlier and it still had quite a bit of stuff..............most of the lot is clean of any CJ's Maybe a dozen or so and........maybe a few flat fenders in pieces. There is still hoods and fenders and assorted body parts that could be unbolted in the racks there & the warehouse. Still has a lot of Wranglers and later stuff.......also a bunch of mail Jeeps..............talked to Mark the owner and he says there is just not a lot of that stuff coming in......he said they bid on all the stuff from Scotty's in So-Cal but were not sucessful.......portions of the lot had some late model cars on it...............Quite the difference. A big change from years back.
