Locking hubs

    So this may seem like a bit of a silly question but what exactly do locking hubs do?? Me and my dad are re-building my 68 cj5 and my dad has worked on hotrods and muscle cars for years and I've worked on a few with him but this is our first jeep and we weren't sure what exactly they did.

    You have to have either them or their military perma-locked equivalent, if you want to use four wheel drive.

    Oversimplification: they allow you to remove ("unlock") the wheel from the driven part of the front axles, or connect ("lock") them again, without having to disassemble anything.

    unlocking them as well as shifting the transfer case leaver will completely disengage the front axle and driveshaft. Modern vehicles front hubs unlock too but they do it automaticly through various gismos built in.
     
  4. yup a set of splines in the hub of the wheels that can be connected or disconnected by manual means. they would connect the hub to the axle when locked. this allows the front differental to be used only when needed saving some gas, in unlocked the wheels will turn independantly of the axles & differental

    Those are on a full float set up. Allows you to unlock the rear axle also for flat towing.

  8. two reasons, used for towing your jeep so you dont have to take the driveline off and on the trail if you break a rear axle the wheel wont fall off as the hub is independant of the axle. you can keep going with the front end engaged.

    Also makes it very easy to disc brake the rear end.

    And you can pull the busted axle out of the one side so it does not do any further damage and your 3 wheel drive now (yea, BTDT, but not mine :) )
