    I borrowed a Snap-On screw in type compression check gauge from a mechanic-neighbor. I spun the engine with the plugs out and the gauge screwed into one plug hole at a time. I just spun the engine until the gauge appeared to max out (this was how he said to do it).

    It maxed out as follows:

    1 = 140
    2 = 140
    3 = 140
    4 = 129

    Of course when I got home I looked in the FSM and it suggested checking compression using the measurements from the 1st and 4th stroke. I was feeling pretty good about it until now....

    What do ya'll think?

    I think you are fine. IF the engine has been sitting for any length of time, then the compression will come up some more once the rings have a little oil on them. Plenty to make it run however.

    Since I've got compression - - I ordered a new Solex carb from Tellico4x4.com. I also ordered a master cylinder rebuild kit since the master cylinder is pumping nothing to the front brakes.

    It was a bugger getting that old master cylinder out. The previous owner (bless his soul) had welded the floor in, and of course the bolts holding the master cylinder in were very hard to get to, VERY frozen up and uncooperative... but it's outta there and laying on the workbench.

    I guess once it's running good (hopefully the new carb will do it) and stopping (master cylinder) the next thing will be suspension and tires.

    The coil spring is missing from under the right rear and it is sagging pretty low. The tires are almost dry rotted too, but hey I still think I got a pretty good deal R) :D

    much better than you're worried about. mine barely pumps up to 110-120 on all cylinders and still runs good, but tired in my mind.

    and what's this "coil" spring you mention??

    Attached are pictures of the coil spring that I was talking about. My landcruiser (cuss word?) buddy from church kinda looked at me funny when I said coil spring too. And for that matter there is none shown in the FSM. I don't think the Jeep has been lifted (maybe just one corner :shock: ).

    As you may already know I don't know too much about suspensions, carbs, engines, tranny's, etc.

    But I'd be happy if ya'll said it wasn't necessary... I'll pop out the one shown if ya'll say it is not necessary, it honestly doesn't look very securely in there anyways.

    Maybe that was a creative way to fix the "Jeep Lean" ;) :D
    Or is that an early TJ concept?? R)

    Yep you can take it out, it's not OEM. It was probably installed to help a weak spring or help correct a lean. Maybe installed to reduce body roll.

    I took the spring out and whattayouknow, it's sitting up straight now. It kinda makes me wonder what in the world the PO was thinking...

    I think the bearing in the alternator (generator) is going bad, it is rattling. Where should I get an alternator from, what kind (F-head)?

    quite possibly the jeep had farm equipment on the back. those coils were not unusually. that Go-For-Digger jeep has them on it "factory" so maybe it was just used to help with a heavy load. still you can remove them if you wanted
