I had off Friday and aparently had to much free time on my hands because I pulled my rear axel down again after just putting it back together last week. I decided to go ahead and put the carrier berings in new since Ive replaced every thing else. My orginal plan was to wait and put full floater and a locker in next year but Im not plaining on puting over 33 12.5 or 34 10.5 on my jeep ever ,so are the stock axels strong enough. They are cheap, both and one hub for around a hundred bucks so if I do break one it isnt like I lost alot of money. I have the 19 spline dana 44 axels which are going to be turning 31 10.50s till i wear them out then hopfully some swamper 33 12.5s or 34. 10.5 ltb swampers . So if i do that and install a lock right unit it would save me money for other upgrades. I do not plan on puting any high hp motor in , I plan on running my :hurrican: and if I do any swap its going to be for a little isuzu diesel or maybe the perkins if I cant adapt the isuzu. Welp what do yall think should I keep the stockers or upgrade to floaters.

With the smaller tires and a smaller motor like yours the 19 spline tapered axles will be just fine. The key to making them live is to regularly check the torque on the retaining nut that holds the flange on. These have a tendency to loosen up and that's when most problems occur. I ran a 19 spline tapered axle in my CJ-5 with 33" tires, a warmed up V-6, and raced it for years with few problems. The only problems I had were twisting the splines. Never broke one, but twisted a few close to breaking point. Again, that was under racing conditions and hot rodding on the pavement. Nickmil.

the only comment I would add is that the cheap foreign made replacement axles out there now are not as strong/good as original Spicer axles.
I have broken 3 shorts and chewed the splines as mentioned in 1 long in the last 20 years; out of the 3, all but 1 were at the axle bearing.
the first one I broke was a Spicer made; then when they were no longer available I used the others; they broke more often; this is moderate Jeeping with 31s.
I am now full float; got tired of that wobbling rear tire ready to fall off.
if you do carry spare axles, grease and press the new bearings on the axles also; makes for easier replacement out on the trail; probably should carry a spare rear hub and key as well; the rear hub can be hard to remove from the broken end.

Thanks for the input Jim. Well if I dont like the stockers I guess later I could make my own floaters and get moser or stage to make me some custom 19 spline axels.that way I dont have to get another locker unit..
