i'm buying a 1974 cj5 AMC jeep, it has the 232 and a 3 speed. i know the AMC's arnt worth as much in parts as a willys and i'm on the fence whether i should part it out or just scrap it and get $450 after i take the parts off i want. i'm keeping the two front seats, rear seat and power angle meyers plow for myself. is the engine and other parts worth anything or am i better off scrapping it, i'll post a pic in a little bit

Part it out. Parts for the 72 thru 75 are harder to find than most. You may be surprised . When I built my 75, I had a heck of a time finding stuff for it.

The axles are definitely worth keeping. It has a flanged, centered D44 rear with 11" brakes, and a D30 front with 11" drums, both of which are great swaps for early CJ's. The 232 isn't worth much, very few people would bother swapping a 232 when you could just as easily have a 258 or a 4.0L. The T14 transmission probably would bring a hundred bucks to the right person, and the D20 would be about the same. So that's about the cost of the purchase price, plus the parts you're keeping. If any of the body panels are salvageable that's a few more bucks. I bought a 78 CJ5 for $300 for parts when building my 74, and between the parts I used and the parts I sold, I made my money back many times over.

Part it and scrap what's left. I don't know what scrap is bringing in your neck of the woods but, it's floating around $10 per hundred pounds around here. You won't see 450 on a cj5 at those prices.

i use a company named Karrs Inc. out of trenton and they run a plant where they take the car and put it in a machine, tell the machine what it is and it uses plasma cutters to cut the axles, engine, and trans loose then they compact whats left into a cube and scrap that and sell the parts wholesale somewhere, and they come to your location with a flatbed, give you $450 cash and take the car with or without title, they dont care.

Keep the axles...scrap the rest. Best Dana 44 ever put in a jeep. I've seen those going for $450.

To get an idea what you can get for the parts, take a look on Ebay. I know I bought a waggie in bad shape for $300. Pulled the motor for my Jeep. Sold the tranny, axles, etc. pulled a few parts and made many times over the $300.

I'd say you are much better parting. Picts would help us give you a better idea.

And an old soft top is worth at least $50 to $100 to someone that does not have a top at all.

If it is complete I think you Campari it out for a good amount of money. Windshield frame decent? Plastic piece that holds the air control cables good? Are you keeping the seat frames? I think you can sell a lot of stuff that don't weigh much that would effect the weight of the jeep when you take it across the scales.
