I brought this up before, but just wondering if it was possible. I finally brought the ole girl home. Its purple, never repainted, CJ5, its titled 1971. Original Renegade 1 decals on it, I thought maybe a late 1970 titled as a 1971. However, I noticed what appears to be a vaccum diagram sticker on top of the front grille by the radiator that shows year of production 1971. I'll take pictures of the sticker tomorrow if you guys think that will help. Just wondering if I've got a purple Renegade 1 that slipped through the cracks into 1971. If you need more info let me know what you all need. Thanks guys. Some other things that may help, Kelsey Hayes steel wheels, locking rear end, 225 V-6. gauges in dash.

Ok here come the pics, if I can get this to work, :). Answers to questions, fuel tank, is located in the rear, not under seat. vin number 8305017 366313. It also has power steering,,,,,,I didn't know that was a luxury with early jeeps???. Also the sticker I was talking about is an emissions sticker. I didn't know they had them this early. It says that it applies to the model year of 1971.

An under-seat tank went to the rear in mid year 1970, so a rear tank could be either '70 or '71. Sounds like a Ren I package on a '71 - as Sparky said, almost anything is possible from Toledo. You have the steel wheels, plum paint and unpainted hood blister, right? Despite what we think it should be, the vehicle is its own evidence.

BTW stock power steering on a V6 Jeep is cool! Was that introduced by AMC?

Power steering would not have been an option on any of these Jeeps. Someone else has installed it. The power ross setup was availabe on several other Jeeps in this era and could have been swapped in.
By the way your jeep may very well have been manufactured in 1971 as your seial number is only 7,952 jeeps behind mine and it was made in april of 1971.

Where is your steering box located???? that would tell alot. Is it a saginaw, mounted on the front frame horn or a ross mounted inside the engine bay at the bottom of the steering column.

Its mounted in the front, on the frame, I tried to add another picture of the steering gear box but I can only attach so many pics before I have to delete others. I'm guessing saginaw? Located just behind the front bumper attached to the frame w/ the power steering lines running into the front of the unit.

Definately not original in any way shape or form but a very good mod and one that most guys that wheel eventually do.

Can you get a dropped pitman arm for a saginaw steering box? I plan on lifting this jeep 4 inches, curious if something was around, or if it'll be fine without too much bind.

Yep you can can get a dropped pitman arm, just remember your not getting it for a 71 cj since there would be no listing. You will have to find out what the differences from one saginaw box to another and then go from there. Nick miller on here might know what or if there are any differences more than I.

As far as the saginaw power steering gear box, the numbers are 5691676, underneath that is an 11 and a 5 farther to the right almost to the front. Hopefully this will help pinpoint what saginaw box I have for the drop pitman arm.

My records indicate that another member, orig70cj5, has a March '70 serial number of 364613, which is only a couple hundy prior to littlepurplecj's.

Would the taper of the tie rod end come into play when looking for a dropped pitman arm? Seems someone told me, long ago, that the tapers differ among car/truck makes. This sorta kept me from getting one. I later considered heim joints but haven't done it yet. If someone was misleading me way back then, please let me know.

I Pm'd Littlepurplecj about this but to answer about the dropped pitman arm, yes, the tapers are different depending on application. If you get a pitman arm for a '76 or newer CJ with power steering you should be ok as they use the same taper on the tie rod ends and the early CJ's. The biggest difference is the clocking of the splines. '72-'75 CJ's had a different clocking than '76 and newer because the mounts were at a different angle. The Manual and power steering boxes used different diameter pitman shafts so they don't interchange normally. Nickmil.

Not to hijack but someone said that power Ross set ups were available on other jeep vehicles and available for a swap? I'm very interested in this.

    Maybe I'll start another thread.
