Sounds like you may be having ground issues.

Be sure the engine is grounded to the frame.

Best to run the battery ground to the engine block, and a ground strap back to the frame for the lights and other accessories.

I would try to jump across the solenoid (at the solenoid) and if your starter cranks the engine then you may have a problem with the ign switch or wiring. If it won't then look at the solenoid or starter. This way, you have a beginning of trouble area.

A '73 is an Intermediate model, which has its own forum here: http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=19

The solenoid is on the inside fender. You can jump from the battery connection to the small "start" connection, marked "S". This will run the starter motor if the solenoid is ok.

What is the state of your battery?

    Is it fully charged?

Now take a jumper cable and jump from the battery positive to the post where the starter cable connects on the solenoid. Starter should run.

If not, bad starter or flat battery or bad connections to the battery (battery cable clamps or ground connection).

ok, the starter was frooze up, took it off and turned it a few times and now it's firing up. Now the problem is: when I turn the key it cranks but, as soon as I release the key back to the acc posistion it goes dead. If I keep the key turned in the start posistion it will keep running. Do I have something wiried wrong.

Yes, it's wired wrong. The + terminal on the coil should be hot with the key turned to "run" - or else the switch is bad.
