Welcome from the Oregon Coast, my fellow 1971 owner. Well my 71 had a 225 Buick as the orginal motor since changed out to a 231 V6 Buick. Mine has a 3 speed, T-14. You should be able to left up the floor pan to see for sure. That's what I would suggest. I think I had a single stick D18, which now has a twin stick D18.

i dont see a floor pan to lift. the old owner welded in 1/4" steel in the floor. the info Sparky gave shows its a t-14 though. what about the axles though? 25 or 30 ? i might look for some 44's:D

'71 should have a T-14 and single stick 18 transfer case if stock. The transmission tunnel should unbolt (sheet metal around the shifter) and lift off so you can access the top of the transmission. Should also have a 27 front and the sought after flanged, 30 spline offset 44 rear only used a couple of years.

ok, yeah around the shifter comes off.so my axles are good as long as i dont put a huge lift and tires on it then? its got 33's on it but it drove fine. i need to tighten up the steering and brakes though. someone put a chevy sawgina p/s box on it and try adjusting it, it pretty sloppy.thanks for the replys guys

Interesting note, there is a member here (rkusa) with a jeep with the next serial number after yours. his has a dash sticker indicating a build date of September, so if you don't have the sticker, it's a pretty good bet that yours was built in sept as well, one of the first of the 71 model year:coffee:

i'll check it. one more question, my front slip yoke is very sloppy. what are my options for repair or replace?

my brakes don't work well because of the gear oil pouring into the brake drums caused by blown inner axle seals.
    Check for glazing.

yeah, i'll check everything when the weather clears, i'll probably change the master cylinder just because i dont like the looks of it. unfortunately it rains alot here in washington and without a garage im out of luck in the fall and winter. i love this place but i hate it too,lol

You asked about the front slip yoke. My 70 also came to me with a sloppy front slip yoke. I ended up taking it over to a driveline shop and they just welded in a brand new one. Not sure what else you could do except replace the whole front drive shaft.

Also, as I understand it, if the slip was worn for some time it has a habit of making the output shaft bushing sloppy too. You may have both happening as I did.

Holy ****, That is my old JEEP!!!! It used to be red, but that roll cage, steering wheel, air filter, gives it away. If it is not mine, then I swear someone cloned it. FYI, that Jeep if it is mine took a very hard hit to he front into a cement wall. If that is my ol girl, it has been hacked up real bad. She did not look that rough
