what length shocks

Im working on springing over the 5 this weekend, question is what length shocks are you guys that are spring over running to get the most travel so the shocks dont hold me up. im running 2" springs on scout axles.

 

I'm just about to the mock up stage (should be there this weekend). I'll let you know what measurements I get.
I'm using 2" RE SOA springs.

 

sounds good ill get some measurements and post them up so we can compair. Im sprung over with superlift 2" springs. looks like we have a lot in common with the builds im running a SBC sm420 clocked D300. are you using stock width axles?

 

Sorry for the slow reply . . . I've had the typical "Intermediate" Jeep blues . . .
The one part I forgot to order going into this project (well . . . there will likely be more . . . ) was the rear U-bolt plates (forgot the originals would be too narrow for the YJ springs). I ordered a pair to be shipped 2nd day air . . . Turns out they were on back order but they forgot to let me know . . . New supplier says they are in stock and on their way!

I got the fronts mocked up and the perches tacked in place . . . Looks like I'm going to have to air down my tires just to get the damn thing out of my garage!

I'll have measurements asap.

ive had the jeep blues so to speak to, i decided to save up and get a locker for the front. any way i took some measurements and have been thinking for some time. going with tall shock hoops in the front and for the rear im gonna incorperate the top shock mount into the cage. ( ive been doing a lot of custom cage work and i basically tubed it all out) so the stock or somewhat stock look kind of went out the window. its gonna be more of a trail rig i think and the every now and then road ride. if you want some measurements let me know and ill post them up

Just so you guys know, a spring over with 2-inch springs is gonna be pretty darn tall - good for 37s or 38s with slight trimming (re-radiusing) of the rear fenders.

On my flattie (I built the shock mounts when it was set up for spring over front and rear using stock YJ rear leafs) I'm running 11-inch Bilstein 5150s on the rear and 10-inch 5150s on the front. The fronts are straight up and down, the rears angled slightly. I've got plenty of travel.

I think if you boys go with a 10- to 12-inch travel shock you'll have plenty.

 

I may still go back to a flatter spring. Reading RE's literature and other info online led me to this choice but the 6-7 inches of lift I'm going to get may be more than I bargained for!

I was planning for 35"-37" tires It's got 33's currently.

 

You could measure ...

If I had the springs on, I could ramp the Jeep to see what the articulation is going to be. I'd measure the maximum extended length, and the length difference with the axle against the frame, and that's the extension I'd need. The location of the top mount above the frame would be determined by the position of the lower shock mount with the wheel fully stuffed, and the length of the shock I'd use.

 

dummy, im not that tall, the jeep is the same width and it is tall. gonna run 35's maybe 37's and if its to tall when i get done with it ill change it but i think it will be ok. if not it will be coil overs in the front and air shocks in the rear. ( i cant stand just looking at the 16" fox airshox in the corner not getting used ) now that i think about it i may do that anyway..... hmmmm the wheels are turning.
