Looking really good Jim. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done. In a way though, I will bet you won't have quite as much fun on the John Bull next time in your new baby as you did in its previous condition. Can't wait to do another run with you sometime.

Put all the ground cables back on. sprayed all the dash hardware w/ zinc spray then re-installed dash. I put the steering column in then fabricated/installed a boot at the floorboard for it. Buttoned up the pumkins.

Decided to move the drivers seat back so I fabricated a support and moved 4+ inches(thank you 6) 17+ inches from pedals to front of seat measuring horizontally:) , gonna have to do the same for the passanger side, but that"s a project for the future.
Tomorrow I plan on filling all the oils etc., bleed brakes, and get ready to fire up

Ok Mike here's what I did....the pass side front, and rear supports just needed to be drilled out in the desired location. The drivers side needs support so I cut a piece of angle iron 16" long then notched it out to slide under the existing rail (where it bolts to in stock fashion). I drilled and tapped 3 holes 5/16"...2 for the support rail, one for the seat support. In the rear you can't see it in the pic, but I welded a tab on the end of the angle then drilled a hole to mount to the body....clear as mud?R)
In the future I'll re-do the mounts all together, but this gets me closer to being road worthy
    Jim S.
ps....I used body caulk/tape under all the mounts so I don't screw up the new paint to much:)

despite the encouragment I recieved here R) I bled the brakes and installed the muffler today. I couldn't get my duel tank switck to work so I bypassed it and fired it up. It runs but won't idle under 2 grand, gonna need a timing light (and someone who knows how to use it:)). I went to push it back in the garage but it won't budge, axles are free so I assuming it's a brake issue. Getting close.........oh and it sounds mean:twisted:

ps, my radiator is leaking from the bottom tank, rad shop went through it already....back it goes

A Timing light and some who knows how to use it will not be CA together until the end of Dec. R) R)

What distributor/carb are you using and are you sure you got the firing order correct for the 289?

It's got the same dist. that was in it when pulled from the M38. I did install an offy 4 barrel intake and edelbrock 625cfm carb. I'm thinking the carb needs adjusting. I'll read up on it tonite, but probably have the mechinic that works for me come over after work to lend a hand. Still perplexed as to why it won't roll, gonna go out after supper and jack up a wheel at a time

    Jim,

It's these little things at the end of a build that can get you all worked up. Stay calm and tackle everything one at a time and remember you did this whole rebuild faster then anyone here so a few more day won't hurt.

It taken me years and I still haven't officially finished (although I'm super close)

Carb should be set and ready out of the box with no adjustment. You can get a spark tester (cheap) at your FLAPS that plugs in between the spark plug and the plug wire and it will light every time it fires. That will let you know if its spark. If that is not it start checking the fuel system.

Took the 6 round the block tonite, but it was anything but uneventful:(.
The bottom rad. hose blew off...fix it ,try again. Go out on the street but wow somethings not right....doh!!! it's in 4wd. Try to put the h/l into high but the lever hits the toolbox before engaging, gonna need to bend it a bit. Turn off the Jeep and the rad boils over badly, assuming the t-stat is stuck (despite being new:mad:)
I guess if it were easy it woudn't be fun:)

    Probably not the thermostat!

You may have a large air bubble in the cooling system and that will cause the boil over. You may be able to rent or buy a coolant vacuum system and that will help get the air out. Or you can remove the thermostat housing and fill the coolant to the top of the thermostat and then put everything together and finish the fill up.

    Hope that helps.

A thermostat installed backwards will cause radical overheating and high pressure.
