Auto Trans in CJ?

    Usually it's TH350s that go into early CJs... Tumbleweed's flatty had a TH400...

    Dang, seller doesn't know a whole lot apparently. Someone asked if it it was a 400 or 350 trans. He didn't answer the question.

    Looks like a TH400, isn't it?

    Driveshaft length is the only drawback. The TH350 fits ok; BC put a V6/TH400 in a 3A, but it was stock height.

    Had a TH350 in a 5 with a V6 Buick once IIRC the rear drive shaft was around twelve or thirteen inches. It was done with an AA kit back in the eighties.

    I would love to have an auto in my CJ. I have looked at some of the options. From what I have seen the turbo 350 at 21", ~25" with adapter or the ford c4 at 17" are the two choices. I think the ford uses a longer adapter. In compairison, the T18 with adapter and bell housing is ~20" and the t-15 ~17. With the t-15 in my jeep (74) my rear shaft is ~18" IIRC. To add 25" of the turbo 350 (using same motor location) would make my rear shaft 10" long. Now go to an earlier CJ and loose a few more inches, I think you get the idea....

    But hey, anything is possible... a V6 would subtract a couple inches in motor so that would move the whole drive train forward. I think a 4.3V6 with a turbo 350 would be OK.

    I am not sure on my dimensions, but I think they are pretty close....

    He says three speed, but then calls it a "metric 200". I wonder if he means 200R4, like out of the late 80's/early 90's S-series. That would be a 4spd, though. I suppose that's part of the fun of E-bay; you don't know what you're getting until after you've paid for it and get it home.

    The seller says it's an OMC motor, but the dipstick is in the block. :? Marine motors have the hole for the dipstick. It's pluged off. It should have a tube that runs down to the oil pan drain plug. This is were you'll find the dipstick.
    If you look in this picture you will see the dipstick tub at the back of the block.

    Could be I recon, from a G-body that used a RWD 231?

    found this by googling "metric 200 automatic trans" came in Monte Carlo's, Regals and such. behind 231 rwd.
    If I were to venture a guess and it is a guess mind you you'd be in the same boat as if you tried to use a 200R4, no adapter due to tailshaft housing configuration for 4wd applications and length.

    I have a TH400 behind my 225 .... well the OP did say CJ not CJ5 R)

    I have a 55 CJ5 w/a 225 Dauntless and a 350 auto it works great I got the adapter kit from AA went in like a dream, just order the small yoke for the front drive shaft 'cause the stock one is to big and it hit the tranny pan.

    I knew a guy many years back who used an auto trans in his V6 ECJ5. He cut off the motor mounts and moved the engine forward to have enough length on the rear drive shaft.

    Not all of them., my Ford marine engine is not that way. The valve covers do look like the pictures in my OMC marine book.
