I am having problems with the shift cane popping out of it's notch while driving in gear.
Do I need to replace the shift cane, or is it something wrong internally? I can shift through all gears effortlessly
While not running. I can drive around for a few miles until it happens. I have to unscrew the top cap, remove the cane, and realign the shift fork notches with a small heel bar and reinsert the cane. It's a real pain.
Any advice for a solution will be greatly appreciated.

The detent balls and springs are either broken, seized, gummed up etc. There are shifter top rebuild kits. If your cane feels sloppy, Novak sells one.

There is also a pin that holds the shift cane into the tower as I recall. This could be missing (yikes). It is often worn and causes a very sloppy feel to the shifter.

You should not be able simply remove and replace the cane from the shift tower at will.

See the first picture on page 10 of this thread.
