Dunno. They wouldn't have done that at the motor pool... I probably will when it warms up. Sigh...

Did they actually paint the drive train or did it just get over spray when they shot the body?

Flipped over and installing shift tower...

Copper crush washers from the NOS gasket set. They missed one at the packaging plant in 1962. Oh well.

    All done.

I'll install the shoes and the rest of the e-brake trim when it's in the jeep. Easier that way.

Oh it was painted. Poorly but it was painted. I'm pretty certain that the bodies were painted separately at the factory. Judging from the underside of this body, it was well done and most of the paint is still there.

Moving onto some brake work. I've discovered that all of my brake shoes are original Bendix. I've parted out quite a few but have never seen these (or never bothered to look).

It would be a shame to scrap these original parts, so I plan to order linings and rivets from Debella. Uncharted territory for me but I think I can figure out how to rivet and reline shoes. I do not buy bonded shoes because I've seen them fail, mostly because of oil contamination. Call me a geek but pretty excited to have original equipment down to this level. These will be blasted and relined. I have to buy another tool. I'm open to suggestions.

Rear slave cylinders. Not the originals but I'm sure they surpass the quality of todays parts. Digging through the stash and I found some NOS parts. I plan to rebuild (another thing I haven't done before). I need to make sure these old rubber parts are pliable. Yes, I have a hone. You guys see how cavalier I am about my self preservation?

Is that a special red gasket or something you coated it with?
Other t/c seals or gasket recommendations?
    We're at a similar stage. 20240123_170305.jpg

So the red coating is Permatex, Spray A Gasket, high tack. See post 225 on this thread, along with others on advice on how to seal the suckers up. I also used thread sealant on everything, including the bolts that mate the tranny/transfer. C-L-E-A-N.

Seems like a fun project. A quick internet search makes it look not too terribly complicated. (y)

I like your attention to detail! Yes, we're working on the same stuff now. The only difference I see in our cases is the vent.

These are the hard lines I removed from the rear axle and I'm pretty certain they're original. It took a little patience but I managed to get them out without damage. I'll use these as templates for the new ones which will be composite (nickel/copper). These might be serviceable but Blalp! say's no. You can see some corrosion at the bends near the slave cylinder ends to the right of the photo.

I have some 3/8" loom kicking around and these NOS clips to secure them to the diff cover. We'll do it right!

I don’t know how to reply to this….I’m fully capable of complicating things too!

I think you missed my question about the seals and the red gasket?

The red gaskets weren’t red. They were a beige colored NOS paper gasket. The red is the high tack permatex spray on sealant. @Fireball posted a picture in post #225.

I suggest replacing the seals with double lipped seals, but verify that your yokes are not scored too badly. If so, replace (or sleeve which I have not done). Put sealant between the gaskets, housing and seals. Very clean. We sprayed the permatex on both front and back of all gaskets and shim packs. We also put sealant on the splines of the yokes. I cannot verify that it's tight but I'll be sure to keep you posted in the spring.

Last post for a bit. A couple of weeks ago, I drained the rear diff and pulled the cover off. Everything looked great inside and hopefully the inner oil seals will hold up. The pinion seal was leaking so that's been changed. I do need to get this buttoned up so the cover and brake junction bracket blasted and primed. Bolts squeaky clean! Years ago I bought this bulk package of gaskets and so far, it's been a lifetime supply.

Thank you for clarifying that red color.

Anyone know of a source for the double lip seals? Apparently Midwest Military did not have them.

I thought the copper washers were supposed to seal the bolt head to the device, thus stopping the thread weaping?
