Got it off...I cut some grooves into the bearing for the bearing splitter to grab onto. Now to order a new bearing and wait a few weeks until I can work on it again....should've gone skiing...guess I'll drink now

Still fighting getting the mainshaft installed...Just don't like the amount of endplay and movement etc...:
Decided some of the issue might be associated with the input shaft. According to the schematic, there is supposed to be a lock ring outside the front bearing (#4)...

I believe it would go in this groove:

But when the bearing is pressed on, there is no way it will go on far enough to expose the lock ring groove. If the bearing would slide all the way up against the 'shoulder step' the ooil slinger is on, then it might work, but it will only press up to the next inner groove, but it won't go over and cover the groove - I assume the inner groove is an oiling pathway. I put A LOT of pressure on it with the 12 ton press and the bearing was bottomed out in terms of movement when it reaches the inner groove, but not over it.

Thoughts? I was initially thinking the bearing was too thick, but this is the correct 'thinner' (.63") 211 bearing from Novak kit. I called their technical support today, but they didn't get back to me. I am thinking of heating up the bearing and trying to get it to press all the way over the inner groove and up against the oil slinger step. I've pressed and pulled this bearing on a few times, and the inside of the inner race is starting to show some wear...wondering how much it can take before we add another new replacement part to the other trashed new parts....this project is getting to me.

Put the main shaft in the freezer for a couple hours at least more if you can then preheat the bearing and fetch the shaft and put together it should go all the way on then.

Its in the works. This was on the only way to get the mainshaft bushings on....just wasn't expecting the input bearing to be such a bear - but maybe this will solve the mainshaft endplay issue - the bearing will move in tighter. Don't know how I missed this issue for 2 days, but once the bearing was pressed on and came to a solid stop, I never really noticed it was missing a snap ring (groove wasn't visible) and my attention was on the rear bearing and stepped thrust washer. At least that one is on correctly to expose the snap ring groove. The rear snap ring is mentioned in the Novak directions as the OEM unit would have used a nut, but the input snap ring wasn't mentioned....After hours wasted I finally looked at the exploded parts view and realized it....arghhh....the more I reflect on it, the more the bearing should seat all the way against the oil slinger step and the more annoyed at myself I am for not having a good picture of it before disassembly to confirm.

I did the T18 rebuild over the winter. I had to take it apart 2 or 3 times. :banghead: Learning.

Then after it was all installed I ran it for 4miles and had to take it out and apart again.

    it’s perfect now.

Ooof!!! I've been there. It's hard to keep a good attitude when "learning" sometimes but it sure helps.

dammit! just figured it out....What a effing stupid moron I've been. I had the base plates set-up wrong on the press....the pilot/clutch tip of the shaft is very small diameter, but of course, the section of the shaft that the bearing slides over and that the snap ring goes on is larger diameter....I wasn't allowing enough clearance with the support plates for the larger section of the shaft to slide through - that is why it was always getting stuck flush with the front edge and cover the snap ring groove. The really stupid part is I did it that way in Montana a couple weeks ago, and now I am home in my own garage set-up and did it same stupid way. Heating the bearing allowed it to slip fit on almost all the way down - it slid so far on that the large diameter portion of the shaft began to come out. When I went to set it on the press plates I realized the through hole was too small...a block of wood and hammer tap and it dropped right one. I am too annoyed to be happy or even relieved....

I did the T14 5 years ago or so...it seemed pretty straightforward. This sm465 has been much more difficult....I may be doing a T18 for the cj5 reasonably soon - hopefully it will be more like the T14 than the 465.

    You’re going to breeze thru a T18.

One thing that you need is a dummy shaft like this to help with assembly and install of the counter shaft. Made a big difference.

Me too. I've got a T18 to take apart in the next few weeks and need the good karma.

The sm465 is a bit of work to rebuild, a little tougher than others I have worked on. Good job working through it!

Now it looks right....front and rear bearings setting all the way in and the large first gear has proper clearance from the rear of the case....
    [IMG] [IMG]

now its time to figure out the countershaft bearing install....

ok...think that is it, countershaft bearings installed...still need to test fit the top cover on and shift through gears, but manually moving the shift collars seems to work....found reverse....

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Need to put the Novak D18 adapter plate on - which also acts as the rear bearing cap and hold stuff in place - and then begin disassembly of the D18....I probably should have done some test fitting of the two pieces with empty cases, but will have to make due.

Its time to get the cj ready for going to moab with Big John,....went and brought it home (its been in garage storage at my parents since beginning of December)...started right up and no obvious leaks or issues. check a few fluids, tire pressure and disconnect the drive shaft....maybe run it long enough to get it up to temp and make sure no coolant leaks.

Looking good! I test fit my sm465 last time the t90 was out and it didn't seem too bad most of the extra bulk is low except the reverse boss. I had to have the cj on ramps to even slide the sm465 under.

The shift cane is the biggest pita so just plan on taking that out and bending it twelve times.

Me and my neighbor did the very same thing. Froze the shaft and heated the bearing and it slid on with no resistance. OOPS forgot the washer.
