Hey everybody, new Jeep owner here.
I bought a 72 cj5 a few months ago, i have searched everywhere but i cant seem to find a diagram of what switches and knobs etc went where on the dash. PO had attempted to rewire it by hacking most of the wiring out and throwing it away, and the only spot i could figure out was the ignition switch location. im sure some holes are extras added in the past, ive looked for pics of dashboards on google etc and cant find anything clear enough to identify whats what.

Like i said, i found the ignition switch location, but what goes above it and below it?

im sure some of these are extras but which isnt and what went there?

the switch hole to the right of the poorly done radio opening is labeled hi-lo-off, is that where the heater switch went?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the '72 TSM?

The gauge holes are correct for the optional oil pressure and amps gauges.

There are a lot of added holes added by the POs, including the radio holes.

Available on CD from RockAuto for about $25. Printed copies are available too, at higher cost.

Don't buy a Haynes or Chiltons manual - you want the factory manual for 1972.

What was the original color? Could it be a purple?

    It is.
there were 3 colors on this jeep when i started stripping the paint. white over silver over wild plum. i know the wild plum color is original because it is everywhere up under the cowl, under the windshield frame, even behind the HVAC box it wild plum. plus when i stripped the paint i found old body work where it had been repaired and under the repair was wild plum.
That color is listed in the PPG paint chip book as being a "special edition only" color, combined with it having the optional gauges in the dash which i am positive are original to the dash as the gauge hole openings have the notch at the bottom like the factory holes should have and it is a flat back as well.
95% sure it is a Wild Plum Renegade.

edit- almost forgot, i found a 1972 TSM online as a .pdf

In 1972, the optional oil and amp gauges were only available with the Renegade package. They were located to the left of the driver, same as in the earlier Ren I and Ren II. In 1973, the gauges were placed on the regular option list, and were located under and to each side of the speedometer.

I love the 74 Wild Plum color jeeps! I used to walk home from school and stop by the Jeep dealership and sit in the new ones on the lot. Around 16 at the time. Some day I will own one . . .
