What is that Jeep you posted ???

    drexotic Happy now?!?!?

OK . . . Here you go ! What is it you Jeep Gurus???

I'm thinking that it is a M38a that has been refitted for Forestry or INS (hence the big horn / siren). The front and rear bumpers look professionally done.

I just got off the phone with the seller. He really has no idea what it is or, for that matter, what it is worth.

He told me he picked it up at an auction last week. It's now in a storage lot (his I'd guess) in Otay Mesa (on the boarder).

I'll post some pics in case the add closes . . .

Oh, isn't there a big car auction at Otay Mesa? I remember reading something about that.

M38A1 grille and dash. M38A1 parking brake. Solid back panel and big opening for the fuel filler is also M38A1. Pretty clearly M38A1. Buick V6 engine, with a 1V carb - could be a 198 or a 225 from a passenger car. I don't know that much about the engines to tell further - AFAIK only the passenger car engines have the 1V.

I smell frankenjeep.....in addition to Tim's observations the dash in an A1 dash but the panel for the instrument cluster is not correct. I'm not sure about the fuel filler due to the angle but on the passenger side there's no port forward of the door for the slave receptacle. Also, the battery box on the cowel doesn't have the latches to open it. Also the parking brake should be mounted dead center not near the passenger seat. I'm thinking an early 5 tub with A1 grill and dash.

No tailgate, lack of "JEEP" on the side not a CJ-5 tub IMO.

I like the options it has on it! Winch, v6, overdrive?

Not much rust from the pictures and if the price was right I would pick it up and have some fun with it.

Judging from the tires and hood ornament, and the fact I can see Mexico across the fence, I would double check the plates go with the vehicle. The guy may have accidentally put the wrong plates on it.monkeys

Are those not 8" KH wheels?
What's wrong with them? I love the look..

They probably are the 15x8s. Those are worthless IMO.

You can't run 'em with any brakes other than 10" drums.

I like my disk brakes/11" drums too much to give them up for wheels that "look" nice.

What throws me about the jeep is the lack of the circular indention on the passenger side. How bout a renegade tub with a military dash and such? The v6 badges could have been added at any time.

it's a "who the hell knows". Lots of 'em. It's got the hinged grille, but no shackle reversal. Civvy marker lights stuck over the black out light holes in the grille. No dog dish in the pass side cowl. And so on. If it was ever in a motorpool of anykind in or out of the military there's no telling what's been done to it. My money is on CJ-5 frame with A1 tub, though.

That said, BKD's M38A1 frame that I bought had the machine gun mount in the rear as well as a shackle-forward front suspension setup that somebody down the line had added. Seems wierd in this day and age to do away with a factory shackle reversal, but Jim's A1 body also had the dog dish, battery box, and fuel door all filled in. Ya never know.

I asked this in the other post but what is the thing where the heatercore would go ? a brake booster??

I thought the same thing. Looks like a booster of some sort. Looks like it is a frankenjeep.

How likely would it be that someone had a R II tub and a M38A1 dash together?

Really seems to me it's a M38A1 tub.

    Occam's Razor.
